Question about Pentair Pool & Spa

1 Answer

I have a an Electronic Chlorine Generator for my pool and and seem to be scooping out about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of calcium everyday from the bottom of the pool. Is this a common problem? I don't think I had the problem the first few years of use and after experiencing it for a year with the original device, decided to install a new generator but I still have the problem. Any suggestions

These generators need to be cleaned every 3-6 months at least. cleaning the cells in a light 1 to 4 acid solution will usually do it.
If your Calcium hardness is too high to begin with , you will need to clean this much more often.

If your calcium hardness levels are above 250-300 parts per million, you just need to treat for calcium. There are plenty of conditioners out there that will do this for you.

We have an Intex above ground pool that takes salt and converts to chlorine. We filled it about a month ago and all was fine for a few weeks, then in the past week the water began turning green. We have...

Intex chlorine generators are very low output generators that fail very often. There is a reason they are so cheap. They do not work well. When using a chlorine generator, it is important to test manually for salts and free available chlorine on a daily basis. Just adding salt because you have a generator will not make your pool manage itself. In order to get the most basic chemistry under control, you need to test for alkalinity, calcium, pH, and free available chlorine.

If you do not have the ability to test these things, spend $10 on a 7 in one test strip that will give you this information.

Note: Chlorine generators have more negative aspects to them than positive. There is not a cost savings as advertised with these units. It actually costs more money, and takes more time to care for. The salt is very corrosive to the pump and filter system as well as the pool itself. The long-time cost would be cheaper to run a chlorine or bromine pool.

Excessive Scale build up on the Chlorine generator Plates. I Have to clean them every day.

Your water is WAY out of whack ... Please check all the chemicals including: Chlorine (ideal is 4 ppm), pH (should be 7.4), Alk (should be 100), Cyanuric Acid (outside pool only)(should be 60 to 80), Calcium (should be 350). Check the balance (see your pool supply company for the procedure to check). Get your salt to around 3400 ppm ...

If your calcium is high, the only way to reduce it is add water with calcium of a known low content of Calcium. If you have too much salt ... you will, again, have to dump water to get rid of the salt.

What about metals? Have you removed the metal from your water? Let the chlorine go to zero and add a sequestering agent ... follow the instrucitons on the bottle. You should add water only through a "bobby sox" filter to keep metals to a minimum.

I hope this helps you ... thanks for using

I have an above ground pool 18' round 52" deep. I purchased the intex saltwater system. I have had it run everyday for 8hrs a day and the ph is high and reads no chlorine. What to do?

Salt generating systems cuase pH to rise over time so you generator appears to have been working. What is the salt level in the water? Perhaps your pool is low hence no more chlorine generation.

Algae forming in pool

Chlorine generators will slowly raise the pH over time. You will always need to have acid ready to be added once the readings start getting above 7.6. You should try and maintain it down around 7.2 - 7.4 to allow for mistakes.

As for the generator; can you turn up the rate it generates chlorine? I am not as familiar with the intex but other brands have an adjustment knob to vary the rate chlorine is made.

Have your water tested professionally at a pool store. Balance the pool water chemistry. Check the electrolytic cell for any calcium deposits on plates and follow manufacturer's instructions to clean.
