Question about Raypak Versa 55 Electronic Ignition Natural Gas Heater

1 Answer

Hello my Raypak Versa Heater sounds like its working just fine. I have it on high and it is definetely letting off heat, but my pool temp has only climbed 1/2 a degree in 4-5 hrs. I have a 25ft x 8ft across pool and its 3ft to 6ft deep. Does the heater need to be serviced? The water coming out in the pool does not feel very warm at all.

When checking functionallity of this heater heres what we need to look at.
Your pool is 6660 gallons with a 55,000 btu pool heater.
Right off the bat I can tell you that this heater is meant for a spa or small pool only.
Depending on where you are located this heater will not even keep up with heating this water in cold temperatures. You should have a 100,000-150,000btu heater installed for this pool.

Since this is what is installed, here it goes.
Make sure there is adequate flow to the heater. All heaters have a recommended flow rate which is more more productive than one that is too fast or too slow. Ideal for this heater is 55-65 gallons per minute, so make sure that the pump is not clogged and flowing freely.

Also, if this is an old heater and hasnt been serviced in quite a while, then the heat exchanger is probably overdue for a cleaning. When the heat exchanger gets dirty, all that heat produced by the burners just gets vented instead of heating the water. a yearly service is highly recommended on these low efficiency heaters.

By the way, you have a 55,000 btu heater that was 81% efficient the day it was installed.
This means that the actually heating btu's is already down to 50000.
the efficiency of these units will go down 2% a year if serviced, and about 3-5% a year if not serviced.

Long story short, the heater is undersized, and probably also needs to be cleaned.

You have to replace the pc board to fix this. In the mean time hit the up arrow button about 30-40 times to make sure you are setting the temp to the max (104 degrees) the count backwards to your desired temp setting.

I have a raypak heater when i fire it up the water temp go's up real fast

I assume this is on a swimming pool. It might depend on how it is plumbed in. Quite often, there is a bypass valve allowing the pool water to bypass the heater incase it's being serviced, or a leak etc. You would close inlet and outlet valves to heater and open the bypass. This would isolate the heater. If you have the bypass open while heating, you will reduce (or eliminate) the flow through the heater. This will allow the water in the heater to heat very fast, and lets be glad there's a temp control or your plumbing would melt. These heaters should have full flow through the heater, and you'll see min temp rise per pass.

My Raypak versa gas heater for my hot tub will not heat the tub more then 96F, temp control is turned all the way up, just stated doing this, it was fine for a year, thanks

Water flo through the heater is too fast and the water can't get hot enough. Your by-pass valve is stuck closed and you need to open your water header and check it out. Or you may have an external by pass that need's to be opened 10-20%. This will be a valve between the inlet and outlet water pipes going to the heater. Good luck and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Pool heater works intermittently. have replaced thermostat kit

Depending on model you will need to ck ethier millavoltes (1/2 to 3/4 of a volt)or 24 volts. but this sounds like a pressure problem. Start by cleaning your basketsand your filter. If this dosn't help you should pull the presure switch from the manifold on the heater and see if their is any corrosen or rust on the sw or in the manifold. One of these should fix your problem. Good luck.

Raypak pool heater piliot light on heat will not turn on

Make sure that gas control knob is set to ON (counterclockwise). Make sure that ON/OFF switch is ON. Check that temperature setting is high enough to call for heat. Make sure pool pump is running and water is flowing to unit.
If not above there is a diagnostic procedure on page 33 of manual at:
