Dear All
I am facing a seriuos kind of problem on a customer location.
I installed a IBM 6400 printer as a network printer for AIX 5.1 just
described as in its manual.
It is configured and functional and printing from AIX 5.1 is fine
but the proiblem is that there are soime charecters appearing at the
end of every job from AIX
these characters are same and some numbers and characters.
Please guide me to solve this issue.

Dear All
I have noticed one more thing about that 6400 printer!!!! whenever any
print job is sent to the printer no matter small or big it waits for
some seconds 919 seconds) and then print come out..... iw onder what
that printer doing for 19 seconds.
It should be noted down that printer is on LAN with RS6000 and on the
same subnet.
I have noticed one more thing which is one of the default job
characteristics of the 6400 printer....i.e initialize printer and
restore defaults after each job.
and both values are true by default.
It should be emphasized that garbage characters are printed before and
after each print job.
What is that...note that i have used pro print emaluation on both AIX
O/S and printer setup sides.
Please give me some ideas to solve that problem ..... i have stuck as
i have used method specified in 6400 manual and it should work but it
is not working!!!

Sasa,
I have worked with the IBM 6400 Dot-Matrix line printer in the past,
and we did have some initial problems with the recommended settings
that interfered with the proper operation of the printer. In our case,
the printer would go offline after every print job, or would stop
printing in the middle of a long job, as if it were done.
Based on what you told us so far, it sounds like the printer's
initialization and restore strings are not quite right. The printer is
receiving ASCII codes from the AIX that it cannot translate and so it
simply prints them out. This may be due to using the IBM ProPrinter
emulation. My suggestion if you have not done so already:
1) Install and use the IBM 6400 driver (printers.ibm6400.rte) when
creating the printer or printer queue on the system.
2) Make sure that the printer is using the default emulatiom (I'm not
sure if pro-printer is the default)
3) Try creating a second printer queue using the "Other - Generic"
driver.
As for the long delay between the time it is sent from AIX and the
time that the job shows up on the printer, you may want to review the
TCP/IP settings to see what may be causing that. You may be doing some
sort of reverse DNS lookup for the printer which causes a delay
(Although that is usually a 90second delay), or perhaps you need to
increase the buffer size on the printer.
You may also want to check the settings on the internal or external
print server, as IBM claims that TCP/IP protocols are only
"indirectly" supported by the IBM 6400. See this web page for more
info:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/d ocview.wss?rs=95&context=SRJSL 3&uid=psd...
Of course, as I mentioned, if you publish the configs for both printer
and queue, this may help someone identify part of your problem. Keep
in mind, you may be showing your customer's IP address and possibly
other confidential details.

Thank you steven for your response....infact i was nearly disappointed
to get any response on my problem on this forum.
Anyhow now returning to the problem ,first i want to mention that
without installing 6400 printer software you can not proceed to create
6400 queue on the RISC system.
Second,i will try to concentrate on tcpip settings and name resolution
issue for having the printing delay solved.
Third i will publish queue settings and printer settings as soon as i
will reach customer site again.
Fourth, steve ! as you have said it is probably initialization and
restore settings problem then WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I SET THESE SETTINGS
TO FALSE.Whether printer will work or not.
Any ideas!!!
