DVDR3575H doesn't recognize replacement HD

Unable to FORMAT the HDD in the device? Perhaps remove the drive - hook it up to a working PC temporarily, and using a partition software program or you could burn a CD (I use PartitionWizard), delete any or all partitions on the new 160GB WD and make that drive UNALLOCATED and UNFORMATTED. Apply the actions as needed - only to that drive (this will at least allow your unit to recognize it properly). Once done, remove the drive from the PC, and put it back into your recorder - see if it recognizes it this time, then try and format it (in accordance with the type of file system the unit uses - which may differ from that of a PC). Replacement drives should be formatted to suit the unit they are intended for AFTER they are fitted, not before. Otherwise you run into compatibility problems (e.g. the drive won't allow recording/doesn't read etc., but might work in a PC). If this is the case, it may explain greyed out options and not being able to record to it. If you still have the original drive, check the jumper setting to be sure. If both old and new are set to CS - leave them as is - don't change that.

My WD does not show any stored contents at all such as photos, movies, and files. "Properties" show that how much space has been used, so I believe the stored data is not completely gone, just...

To find out if the files are indeed there just boot from a Linux Live -CD like
http://www.mandriva.com/en/downloads/one/
and connect - open the WD in it - if the files are still there just copy them elsewhere. If the files are missing then the file system has bee corupted. Boot back in Windows and run a recovery program like

The I/O Error only occurs when I try to transfer some movies to my 160GB WD. I don't understand why, please help

It is possible the files are too big. Keep in mind that most external drives when they come from factory are using the "FAT32/16
file system which has a 4gb limit per file. You would need to format the drive to use "NTFS" instead
HOWEVER!!!!
FORMATTING ERASES ALL DATA!!!
You can right click on the drive under my computer and chose format to change it,

Hope this helps

Cannot get automatic storage and update of files on to WD Passpor

There is a Backup in XP but its well hidden - go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and you will find it there. If not, it may not have been installed when XP was loaded on your system.

If you want to try something else, Google on " Free backup programs" - that should turn a few up.

WD Passport Essential 160gb with PowerBook G4

The problem is that your powerbook G4 does not provide enough power to your 160gb passport HD. This does not happens to the new Macs with intel inside.
There are several ways to fix it:
1) Go to West Digital Website and buy a "Power Buster Cable USB" (that connect your 2 USB ports to your passport HD in order to provide more power). I think that it costs 10$. This is the link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/accessories.asp?ProdID=170
2) The other solution is easier. If you have an external USB hard drive with two USB ports, or a DVD/CD burner with two usb ports, you can pug your passport in one of the ports while the other HD or DVD/CD burner is connected to you PowerBook. You will be able to see and use your q60gb Passport HD.
