Question about Garmin nuvi 255W GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Garmin nuvi 255W will not power down. The power switch is ineffective. Also the screen display is an aerial view of my home but does not respond to pushing the Back, Save or Go! buttons. It is totally locked up.

Force shutdown by holding the power button until it turns off (usually 10 seconds)

Re-try.

If still no go - a master reset is in order:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

If you would like to back up your favorites...

In order to back up your Favorites:

1. Using a USB data cable, plug the device into a computer
2. Double-click the My Computer icon (Mac users can skip this step)
3. Right Click the nuvi drive and select explore (Mac users can find this on their desktop)
4. Double-click the Garmin folder1
5. Double-click the GPX folder
6. Copy the current.gpx file
7. Paste this file to another location on your computer
8. Rename the file current1.gpx

Once you save a copy of the GPX file on your computer, you have successfully backed up the waypoints within your device.

To restore these Favorites on your device:

6. Copy the current1.gpx file saved to your computer
7. Paste this file to the GPX folder (You will need to have both the current.gpx and current1.gpx file in this location)
8. Unplug the device from the computer

At this time the favorites you backed up should be restored on your device.

1. If you own a nuvi 1xxx series device you will not need to open the Garmin folder.

Note: To open a .gpx file on your computer, you must have MapSource mapping software installed.

To perform a Master Reset on the nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 600, 700, 705, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 or 1600 series device:
For the 660 and 680 - use the TOP LEFT corner instead in step #2.

1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
* You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

Once finished - head over to Garmin and download their WEBUPDATER software. It will check/download/install the latest firmware for your device.

Thanks!!

Device: Garmin Nuvi 660 NA. After power on, nuvi boots thru to the "Where to" page. On the prior page, the touchscreen will not click "Enter" but after a time delay, nuvi proceeds to...

*Master reset your Garmin Device:

1.Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power;

2.Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil

3.Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON

4.Release the power button when the device powers ON

5.You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?

6.Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays - Touch Yes

7.The device will automatically reset. Please follow the on screen prompts on the nuvi .

*If the touchscreen is incorrectly detecting where your finger touches the screen, the screen may need to be calibrated.

1.Power the unit On.From the Where to? and View map screen, touch Settings . Touch Display>Touch Re-calibrate

2.A new screen will display that says Press Dot,Touch the Center of the Dot.

>Keep touching the center of the dot as it moves around the screen.

3.When Calibration Complete appears on the screen, please touch OK.

The screen will now be Re-calibrated.

*If the screen is not responding to touch, the device may not have enough power to function properly. Recharge the battery completely and try again. If the battery does not charge, it may need to be replaced.

If the screen is still not responding to touch commands or displaying properly, the display may need to be replaced. If sound comes from the device, it is likely the motherboard is working, and only the display needs to be replaced.

Refer to:Garmin Nuvi 660 Screen Replacement Guide

Before replacing the display, check that the ribbon cables connecting the display to the motherboard are connected securely.

Screen seems OK but there is no way to interface as it does not respond to touch. Unit is 255w and about 2 years old.

The solution to this problem is for you to calibrate the screen. Before calibrating the screen, i will advice you reset the gps. To reset your device, hold down the power button for about 15 seconds, it will restart itself and power up fully, if the touch screen does not still work, then calibrating the screen will do the job for you. To calibrate the screen, follow the steps below:
  1. Turn off your nuvi,
  2. Hold the upper left corner of the screen, then turn on the nuvi,
  3. Release the power key once the garmin screen appears,
  4. Continue to hold the upper left corner of the screen for 30 seconds till a white screen with 'touch dots' appears,
  5. Then follow the rest of the guide from there.
It might take a few tries before it works for you but you have to keep trying till you get it right. I am very certain that this will work for you.
