Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Dryer will not start. The door is closed. I have checked the circuit breaker and it is on. It seems to be a problem with the start switch.

An expensive fix? Time to buy a new dryer?

Depends on what the problem is.
Is it electric or gas?
Is it getting power to the control panel? Check circuit breaker.
Does it start after cooling down? Clogged vent hose.
Is the start switch or door closed switch damaged?
Can you turn the drum by hand? If not bearings, glide pad or motor.
With the controls set to run, turn the drum while depressing the door closed button and see if starts. Start capacitor bad.
Thermal switch bad? Check with ohm meter.

Normally in the middle of a cycle I would pick Clogged vent or circuit breaker. Both cheap do it yourself repairs.

70 Series Dryer will not start. Checked breaker box. Unplugged unit and checked connections and cleaned out built up lint dust. Door is sealed properly and light inside dryer is still on when door is

Check the motor for a blown fuse or circuit breaker attached to it, maybe a wire is disconnected from it. Another thing to look at is the actual switch on the top. Is it making good contact? Does it have a fuse or circuit breaker attached? Is it getting power?

Won't start

Check the door switch by listening for an audible click just as the door opens or closes. If you do not hear an audible click then the door switch is bad. IIf you hear this audible click then go to your circuit breaker box and check to see if they have tripped. If the circuit breakers have tripped reset them ONCE and try the dryer. If the breaker trips again DO NOT reset it. You have an internal short in your dryer and it will require further service.

Dryer will not start. The circuit breaker is intact and the door closes tightly.

Could be the door switch or door pin not making contact with pin. Open the door, set the timer to run, now use a small screwdriver to press the door lock switch. If machine doesn't run then suspect switch, if it runs then check the pin on the door as something may have snapped. If all seems fine with the pin and handle and machine works with screwdriver then the switch may be loose and been knocked out of place. Door could still close tighly but not be getting switched on by pin.

Won't turn on

CHECK THE FOLLOWING----

1. No power to the dryer
Make sure there's power getting to the dryer. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Check the wall socket for power with a voltmeter or by plugging something else in.

2. Door switch / Door switch actuator lever
The dryer would not start with a broken door switch. Replace the door switch if found defective.

Most dryers have a door switch actuator lever - when you close a dryer door, it presses against the lever, which actuates the door switch. If the lever is broken, the switch would not activate and the dryer would not start. Replace the lever, if broken.

Note: Door switch actuator lever usually comes with the door switch assembly and it is recommended to get the whole assembly since there is almost no price difference between the door switch assembly and just the lever. Check your model for more details.

3. Thermal fuse
Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.

Note: It is recommended by most dryer manufacturers to replace a hi-limit thermostat when replacing a thermal fuse.

4. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

Has a household fuse blown or has a circuit breaker tripped?
There may be 2 household fuses or circuit breakers for the dryer. Make sure both fuses are intact and tight, or that both circuit breakers have not tripped. Replace the fuse(s) or reset the circuit breaker(s). If the problem continues, call an electrician.
Is the correct power supply available? (Electric dryers only)
Electric dryers require 240-volt power supply. Check with a qualified electrician.
Is the dryer door firmly closed?
Your dryer door may not be fully closed. It may look shut, but may not be latched. Push on the door to engage the latch or latches. Some models have an upper and lower latch. Both latches must be secure for the dryer to run.
Was the Start, Push to Start or Hold to Start button firmly pressed?
Large loads may require the Start, Push to Start, or Hold to Start button to be pressed and held for two to five seconds.
Is the Cycle Control knob set on a Sensor Dry or Timed Dry cycle? (on some models)
The Cycle Control knob must be set in a Automatic Dry or AccudryTM or Timed Dry cycle. The dryer will not start if set on the Wrinkle ShieldTM option.
Is Controls Locked status light on? (on some models)
Press and hold the Cycle Signal button for three seconds. This will turn off the Controls Locked feature.
Did you recently install a power supply cord on the dryer? (Electric dryers only)
The power supply cord may be incorrectly installed. If the power cord is incorrectly installed, the dryer may not start or heat. Review the Installation Instructions to check that the power supply cord is properly installed.

MY MAYTAG DRYER DOES NOT WORK WHEN I TRY TO START IT. THE LIGHT TURNS ON WHEN I OPEN THE DOOR HOWEVER. THE DRYER IS 4 YEARS OLD.

try this first:
  • turn off the dryer circuit breaker in the house then turn it back on. sometimes the dual breaker will trip on only one side leaving you with a non functioning machine that seems to have power.
  • also check the door switch and make sure it is clicking when you slowly close the door.
if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

Maytag Electric Dryer Stopped Working

Check spring tab behind door switch-if it's bent/out of adjustment, circuit will act like door is always open.

To confirm this, open door, set dryer to active setting, and hold in door switch; if it comes on, then it's either the spring tab, or the switch is malfunctioning
