Lx280 slip clutch pulley (for PTO, not the drive pulley) is broken, how do I remove it?

put the nut back on were it is even with the stud and hit with a hammer while pulling on the pulley

remove the pto unit and then remove the above pulley easely, spray some nut buster on the pulley and it will come off

How to change pto belt on club cadet 1046

To replace a transmission drive belt on a Cub Cadet LT1046 you need to remove the deck, preferably put the front wheels up on blocks or stands, unplug the PTO power (directly under the engine, which can be a pain ) You need a 5/8" socket to get the bolt out of the PTO pulley assy.(electric clutch). If you don't have an impact wrench take a spark plug out and push rope into the hole. This will bind the cylinder and keep the drive shaft from turning. Remove rope and replace plug when finished. Battery and/or spark plug wires should be removed for this process for safety.
The PTO may be stuck on there so you may want to tap it with a hammer and a block of wood carefully to release it. Loosen old belt from tensioner pulley. Lower engine pully on drive shaft, below pully "keys". It may be difficult to remove. Spray with "PB Blaster" or similar bolt loosener spray. Remove old belt from engine pulley first, transmission pulley last. Remember how belt goes around pulleys before doing so, make a diagram to help.

You'll need to put the belt on the transmission pulley first then thread the belt up to the engine pulley. Thread your belt back through the pulleys and tensioner (make sure your spring is strong enough to tension the belt or buy a new one).

The PTO pulley is "keyed" on the shaft. Replace bolt and washer. Torque bolt to 38-50 ft. lbs. using the rope meathod as described before. Put your deck back on and you're ready to mow again

If you are talking about an electric PTO system, then there are two possible causes. The first is voltage drop. If your alternator is not charging the battery correctly, the available power to operate the PTO Clutch will drop below critical level. If you have to keep putting the battery on charge, this is almost certainly the cause.

The second possibility is mechanical failure of the PTO clutch. One of the most common clutch failures causes them to overheat and when the temperature increases, so does the electrical resistance.

Try this test:
Park the machine on a flat, level surface, switch the engine off,lock the brakes, remove the spark plug lead then remove the cutter belt from the engine pulley.
Now try to turn the PTO pulley on the engine. It should be firm to turn and you may hear/feel a slight grinding (this is normal). Next, turn the ignition switch to the 'run' position (NOT the start position), then turn the PTO switch to the ON position. Reach back under the machine and try to turn the PTO pulley again. This time, it should feel much heavier to turn because it's now connected to the engine shaft. It should turn smoothly for about 3/4 of a turn either way. Most importantly, you should no longer hear/feel any grinding. If you can still feel grinding, it means the PTO clutch has had a mechanical failure. In some cases, the fault can be rectified, however it is not generally recommended as a D.I.Y task.

How to i change the drive train belt on my cub cadet z force 50

  1. First park your mower on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  2. Remove the deck drive belt from the PTO clutch.
  3. Remove the electric PTO clutch. This is done by disconnecting the electrical wires first. Then removing the center bolt using an impact wrench. A pull bar can used but you must prevent the engine from turning by blocking the flywheel.
  4. Remove the tension on the drive belt idler.
  5. Remove the drive belt from around the pulleys. Be careful as the engine may try fall off depending on if it isn't seized on yet.
  6. Installation is the reverse of the above instructions.
  7. After install the PTO clutch tighten the center bolt to 55 ft lbs using a torque wrench (not your impact wrench) with the flywheel blocked from moving.

This procedure should be performed with the deck removed. Removal of the PTO clutch and engine pulley should be step one. The crank bolt is 5/8ths. Be sure to unplug the clutch before you remove the bolt. Plug is at hole in chasis on right side rear of engine compartment. Lock brake. Drop the clutch and engine pulley, remove belt from engine pulley then from transaxle pulley. Remove belt from idler pulleys. Istallation is reverse of removal. Be sure the PTO clutch is seated in its retainer ( a bracket that comes down from the chassis and fits into a notch on the PTO clutch. This keeps the clutch from spinning around when engaged. It will rip the wires out if not secured properly). If you bent any belt guides to get the belt off without removing the engine pulley be sure to bend them back.

I have a John Deere LX280 and when I started the blades up with the pto it worked for 5 seconds and stopped. I noticed the belt had been slung off but after I replaced it I can't get the pto to do...

it is a possibility that when belt came off it may have damaged wires going to your electric clutch
check them over good and use a volt meter and check for power with key on engine not running and pto sw. turner on

A PTO clutch can wear out and slip, but how have you determined it's the clutch internals, and not the mower drive belt that is slipping? Take off the mower drive belt and inspect it. Make sure it's not worn out or stretched. Make sure the spindles and pulleys turn freely and aren't frozen or binding. When you reinstall the belt, check the tension on it -- usually shouldn't be able to deflect the belt more than about 1/2 inch with strong thumb pressure. Some mowers use two springs to tension the idler pulley. If one spring has come undone or gotten lost, you'll get slippage. If all that is OK, then you may have internal slippage in the clutch. Removing and disassembling the clutch can be challenging, and replacement is expensive, so check for more common problems first.

How do i get the upper pulley above the pto clutch

I've yet to remove these in one piece...even when I smeared anti-seize all over it. You can try a 3 jaw puller, but you'll most likely end up just bending the pulley. The pulleys are about 25 dollars locally in my area. Honestly, i just air chisel them off, and buy new every time i change drive belts.

Broken belt

This is actually pretty simple:

Remove Pto guard on mower deck

Stand mower up on back stands

Pull the friction disc away from the drive disc

slip new belt in between the friction disc and drive disc pushing all the way through

release friction disc allowing to come back in contact with drive disc

loop belt around engine pulley

let mower back down

route belt around mower pulley

loosen guides on idler pulley

route belt through idler pulley

with engine off move pto lever to tighten mower belt

adjust guides on idler pulley allowing 1/8" from belt

tighten bolt on idler pulley

release pto tension

install mower pto guard

and you should be ready to mow
