Hello

Hewlett Packard (HP) computers come with preinstalled programs that some users enjoy. Others, however, find these complimentary programs cumbersome. If you do not plan on using some of the default HP programs, then you're better off removing them altogether. Lingering preinstalled software chews up your hard drive space, leading to a decrease in overall storage capacity as well as system performance. Luckily, you can clean up a new HP computer in just a few steps with the right know-how.

Click on the "Start Menu."

Click to select "Control Panel" from the list of options.

Click on the heading labeled "Uninstall a program." This is located beneath the "Programs" heading in the main Control Panel window. A new window will open up with a listing of all programs currently installed on your new HP computer.

Browse the list of programs until you notice any unwanted software. Click on the software that you want to remove and then click the "Uninstall" button located toward the top of the screen.

Click "Continue" when prompted by Windows. This will trigger an automated uninstall procedure, removing the clutter from your computer. Once you've purged your computer of unwanted HP software, you can further clean the computer of unused files, Internet cookies and cache files for even better performance.

Close all currently open windows.

Click on the Start Menu again.

Click "All Programs." A list of programs will expand to the right-hand side of the Start Menu.

Click on the "Accessories" folder to view its contents.

Click on the "System Tools" subfolder.

Click on "Disk Cleanup." This will open Microsoft's automated disk cleanup program, useful for purging unwanted files from your computer.

Click to "check" all the cleanup options that appear in the Disk Cleanup window. This will ensure that your system is completely cleaned of unneeded junk files; if any options are left unchecked, Windows will not delete certain files. Crucial system files and user files are not touched during disk cleanup, so you don't have to worry about losing your vital information during the process.

Click "OK" then select "Delete Files." Windows will then automatically remove unneeded files from your new HP computer according to Microsoft's website. This will free up hard drive space and help your PC run faster.

How To Clean Up Your Computer

Everything in life needs maintenance, and your computer is no different. Everything you do and see on your computer takes up space. Over time, heavy use can start to weigh it down and make your pc run slow. What can you do when your computer becomes cluttered and slow? That's easy! You can clean it up and reorganize the stored files for optimal performance.

The first thing to do to clean up your pc is to run "disk cleanup". Disk cleanup is a program that deletes clutter and creates more useable memory. If you are using Windows Xp, you can find disk clean up by clicking on "start", then "programs" and "accessories". Then slide over to "system tools" and click on "disk cleanup".

After clicking on disk cleanup, your computer will display a message that says it is calculating how much space can be recovered on your "C" drive. When it is finished, you will see a screen that shows choices of files in which to purge on the left and the "ok" button on the bottom. Click on every box that is available and choose ok to begin cleaning your disk.

This process can take a while, depending on how long it has been since the last time you cleaned your computer. When its finished, the program will have removed all unnecessary files to free more memory space. But we are not done yet! There is still one more program to run the complete the process and leave your computer running at its best. That program is called "disk defragmentor" and its found in the same place as disk cleanup.

To run disk defragmentor, click on "start", "programs" find "accessories" and then choose "system tools". Click on disk defragmentor and a window will open asking which drive you wish to defragmentate. Choose your "C" drive and then click "ok" or "defrag" at the bottom.

Disk defragmentor reorganizes files to bring all of your free space to the front of the drive where it is needed most.

Running both of these programs once every couple of weeks will keep your computer at its best.

S.yimg.com is controlling my Yahoo mail and slowing down my pc. How do I get rid of s.yimg?

s.yimg is a server for yahoo mail and is part of the yahoo mail process. First, make sure your internet browser is cleaned up. I like a product called cleanup from stephen gould. http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=69
Another popular product is ccleaner. They both will remove cluttered temporary internet files and cleanup cookies. This may help your slowness problem. Another thing to check is your DNS. I like to add Google's server 8.8.8.8 into the dns settings.

Increase the virtual memory of the computer.

How to increase Virtual Memory?

In Windows XP
1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4.On the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, click Change.
5.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
6.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
7.Click Set
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Special Note: You should choose the same amount for the initial size and maximum size. This will Stop your CPU from constantly changing the paging file.

HOT TIP: To stop your CPU from constantly changing the paging file, set the initial and maximum size to the same value. For example, 500 and 500. The value should be at least 1.5 times more than your physical RAM. If your computer has 512MB of RAM increase the virtual memory paging file to 1.5*512= 768

In Vista

1. Click Start button Picture of the Start button
2. Click Control Panel
3. Choose System and Maintenance and then click System.
4. In the left pane, click Advanced system settings.
5.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
6. Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, choose Change.
7. Click Custom to change the Initial size (MB) and Maximum size. See the hot tip above.
This will improve the performance of the computer.
Thanks.

When try to sign in it says cookies won.t allow it i neeed access to my email what do i do cookies seem to be preventing me from logging on to get to my email

I assume you are using Internet Explorer as your browser. Open the Control Panel > Internet Options > General > and below the general tab, locate "browsing history", select "delete browsing history on exit", click "Delete" > "Apply" > "Ok" (you have to do this while the internet explorer is closed, otherwise all the cookies and temporary files will be unable to delete).

Now open the internet explorer and access the site again. Hope it's gone now and you can access your mails.

If in case the problem persists, you need to use a system cleaner, (click here to download a cleaner-freeware) or run the disk clean-up wizard, open "My Computer" right-click C: > "Properties" > "Disk Cleanup" > on the disk cleanup wizard dialog box options, select the applicable location/programs including Temporary internet files and Temporary files, click "Ok".

[If you are using another browser like Mozilla firefox, googlechrome, etc..etc.. it's best and easiest to run the program mentioned above, but always run the program while the browser is closed]

That'll definitely fix your problem.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I have a Compaq Presario C501NR 32 bit notebook. My question is how can I use disk cleanup to free up 5.51GB of disk space? What can and can't I delete without messing up my system?

Using disk cleanup will delete temp files, cookies, internet files but that will not be nowhere close to 5.51 GB, you can use disk clean up to remove windows componets as well. You will have to decide what you need and don't use such as games, etc.

Is there a particular reason why you need so much space freed up?

I want to know how to change the option of saving my password.

Your internet passwords are saved in the cookies. Install ccleaner. It is a free software and run this application to deleate cookies. Don't use the ccleaner as a registry cleaner. It is still under development. Use only for general disk cleanup. Ccleaner is an advanced disk cleanup software works better than the windows default disk cleanup application.

For problem #1 you should run Disk cleanup and then Disk Defragment in the Accessories/System tools folder.

For problem #2 it sounds like helps and service is stopped or the registry is corrupt. Follow this link to fix the problem:
