Question about Canon PowerShot SD500 / IXUS 700 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Canon ixy 700 works fine with SD memory card 512KB. Purchased a new 16GB card but when I get a "Memory Card Error". I figure it's a firmware issue that isn't handling cards of this size. I have been on the website http://web.canon.jp/imaging/ixus700/frm-e.html#serial but it says my canon is currently running at the latest firmware (not sure what that is or how to find out). Happy to pay for a fix but I don't want to pay much for an answer which says 'you're stuffed, this can't be resolved". Please bear this in mind with your pricing.

Hello

OK unfortunately your camera only supports a memory card up to 2GB. Fortunately there is a firmware update which might resolve the problem, however, this is not legit firmware supplied by Canon, hence, the full effect of the upgrade is not described.

You can have a look at the following link, to see if your camera is at the international standard firmware version.

I also need to mention that it is rather "Dicey" to upgrade the firmware of your camera yourself, because any faulty connection in mid - updating will result in a totally useless unit. So, if you have the time, take it to your nearest service center, let them check if there is any upgrades available, and upgrade the firmware.

Also, i have not found any firmware upgrade which is a newer version since the camera was manufactured.

You can have a look at the other update i mentioned at the link below.

I really hope you can get this resolved, although i doubt that the firmware available for this unit will sort the problem out. I also understand the fact that you don't want to pay for an answer which states that there is nothing to be done, but you will need to understand, if the camera is hardware limited to a 2GB card, no software can change it.

Please feel free to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards
Andrea

Canon sd600 wont read 16gb memory card

No. The SD600 works with MMC and SD cards, which max out at 2GB. It will not work with SDHC cards such as your 16GB card.

Just installed a new memory card in my powershot A430 and the camera says memory card error, card is locked. how do I unlock?

What type and size memory card? The A430 works with SD cards. It won't work with SDHC cards.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

The PC1101 uses SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. Since this is a hardware incompatibility, no amount of firmware changes will make it work. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

From page 145 of the A520 user manual, it appears that the largest SD memory card that this camera is able to use is a 512MB SD memory card. The manual is dated "2004", so this size limitation is not unusual for a camera of this era.
If you've purchased anything larger, there is a good chance that it won't work with this model camera.

A 4GB memory card will be an SDHC type. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Will my canon ixus 60 take a 16gb memory card

Yes. The IXUS 60 was designed to work with SD cards. Cards larger than 2GB are actually SDHC (the HC stands for High Capacity) and will not work in this camera.

Here's the specs for your camera from Canon. Sorry, but an SDHC card is not listed as compatible with your camera. Only SD or MMC. Now look on your 16 and 32GB cards. You'll see SDHC stamped there. Although SDHC looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the cards use are very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out.
You'll need to instead purchase a standard SD card (those that are 2GB or less). Fortunately these are very inexpensive these days, with 2GB cards going for around $6 with shipping.
