Question about RCA HD50LPW165 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Whining noise problem and color flickering

I recently purchased an rca hdtv dlp tlevision. Within 2 months of use, when starting up the tv it would give off a whining, irritating type of noise, and then it would stop, and the lights would blink on and off. So recently, I replaced the lamp, and the television now comes on, but within 30 minutes of watching tv, it would start making that whining noise again and the colors on the tv would change rapidly. What could be this problem, and what would I have to do and how much would it cost?

Thanks,
Rob F.

You better to check the color wheel or Lamp ballast.

Normally, the noise comes from color wheel.

I have a RCA 50in DLPModel #M50wh74s

Two possibiltes. A bad cooling fan or what is known as a color wheel. is this a whining sound. does the colors flicker. a bad fan could have contribited to the bulb going out too. to identify a technician would have to take back of and examine fans and listen

This not a DLP set and does not have a bulb that the customer can replace.
It may need a firmware upgrade if avaiable.

Buzzing is usually indicating the color wheel is defective. Or it could also be the lamp fan malfunctioning as well. My quess would be the color wheel as thats a fast moving part which is prone for bearing failure.

Whining Noise - hardrive or fan?

The color wheel is the most common problem when it comes to noise from DLP's. To determine if it is a color wheel or fan: Turn on the set. When the noise starts, turn off the set. If the noise goes away within 5 seconds, then the color wheel is bad. If the noise goes away after one to one and a half minutes after the set was shut off, then one of the fans are making the noise.
