Question about Porter Cable Air Tools & Compressors

2 Answers

I have a Porter Cable C2001-WK compressor. Air leaks out of pressure regulator adjustment knob constantly. Builds up just enough pressure to use tools but never reaches full pressure so it runs constantly. When you switch it off the built up air immediately leaks out of adjustment knob.

I have a porter cable C2001wk compressor that also leaked air from the regulator, key word (LEAKED.) It is now running like new, holding air pressure overnight. Problem fixed. I wasn't going to pay $50 plus dollars for a new regulator as Porter Cable and some of the companies on the internet wanted me to pay. I went on www.thepartsbiz.com and ordered a Porter Cable C3151, CPF23400S Air Compressor Regulator Repair Kit. I know its not the correct kit according to Porter Cable but for $21 including shipping, what did I have to lose. Installed pall the parts that came in the kit and my leaking compressor days are over. Hope this kit helps you fix your leaking regulator

My Porter Cable pancake outlet regulator doesn't seem to work.

If your quick coupler is not jammed up, (remove & test) and assuming you are pulling the regulator knob out to adjust the pressure and it is not stripped, you will need a new manifold kit.
There are about 6 versions of this unit so you will need model and type to get the correct part. There are no individual regulator parts available for this unit.

I have a C2001-WK that does not auto shut off

A regulator controls the pressure in the air line leaving the compressor and does not affect when the compressor turns on or off.

The pressure switch monitors the pressure in the tank and turns the compressor motor on and off when the switch closes or opens in response to changes in the tank pressure. If the compressor does not shut off, it is possible the pressure switch has been set to a pressure level that is higher than the compressor is capable of attaining, thus it does not shut off.

The compressor is capable of developing 150 psi and is noted as having a "120 psi cut-in pressure". When you say it doesn't shut off, does that mean it will generate 150 psi or more of pressure and fails to shut off or it develops less than 150 psi and does not shut off.

If the compressor does not generate 150 psi, then it is probably somewhat worn out and not capable of developing enough pressure to meet the factory high pressure limit. I would try adjusting the pressure switch upper pressure limit down to 130 psi or less (less if the compressor will not develop 130 psi) and see if this solves your problem If it doesn't,

If the compressor will develop 150 psi or more, then try adjusting the high pressure limit to less than 150 psi. If you can't adjust the high pressure limit then the pressure switch is defective and needs to be replaced.

Brand new compressor...air builds in tank but turning the regulator result in no change in the regulated pressure. Tried turning the regulator to make sure it moves freely, and it seems to, but still no...

The regulator has a very strong spring inside causing knob to get harder to turn as you increase the pressure (increase clockwise). If the knob is easy to turn most likely stripped inside. If knob gets tight as you turn then plunger at rear of regulator is stuck. On the back side of the manafold directly opposite the adjustment knob is a small nut housing a plunger. Let out all the air from the tank and remove the nut. Seperate the nut and plunger, lube and re-install. If the regulator knob is stripped you will need to replace the manafold or as a temp fix remove the safety valve (let out air from tank first) and install a tee fitting. On one port of the tee reinstall the safety valve and on second port install quick fitting for full tank pressure (or install aftermarket pressure regulator ).

I just took my Porter Cable C2002 compressor out of the box, plugged it in, turned it on, rotated the regulator counter-clockwise and the pressure gauge does not move off zero.

Hi alchids...
You only need to adjust your regulator normally one time...that is the first time you use it to set it to the pressure you want.
Try to rotate the regulator knob clockwise, that is the way you adjust the amount of air pressure you will want.
If the gauge still does not move try changing the gauge, it may be faulty.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

Pressure builds to 150 psi but the regulator will not increase above 60 or so psi. this is causing the nail guns to not shoot correctly.

When the regulator fails, usually air will leak from under pressure knob, however in your case the nut must be stripped of its thread. May need to replace the manafold for fix(most regulators are built into manafold). To allow you to continue using the compressor, add another quickconnect at pressure release port. Let all air out of the tank. Remove pressure safety release, and install tee fitting. Re-install pressure safety on one of the ports of the tee fitting and a quickconnect at the second port. You will have tank pressure available while you order the manafold. Or just add a generic regulator before the quickconnect and forget about replacing manafold. Good luck.

My four-year old PC pancake compressor starts fine but only builds up 60 psi no matter how I adjust the pressure regulator. The compressor motor runs continuously. I checked for air leaks and can't find...

First take off the head on the air pump and check the reed valves on the valve plate. If they got hot and warped or cracked they'll work to a point then no more pressure can be built up. Next check the pistion ring and cylinder wall. If either is damaged you'll only get so much pressure build-up then it will leak past the piston.

Air Leak From Pump Head on Porter Cable C2001 Pancake Compressor

The real question is where exactly is the leak coming from. Compressors have a pressure release valve designed to let the pressure off of the compressor motor so it can start when there is pressure in the tank. This valve is often the culprit and fairly easy to replace. You can order it direct from porter-cable online. Just in case double check the drain petcock sometimes these get worn and won't close completely and can easily be over looked when trouble shooting.

How do you utilize the air pressure control knob.

Most air pressure regulator knobs work like a "child-proof" cap on a medicine vial.  It has a spring inside that keeps it dis-engaged from the tooth like gears inside.  To turn the knob you must first pull out or push in the knob.  You should feel some resistance from the spring inside.  As you pull, you will feel the knob seat into the "teeth" inside.  Then you can turn the knob and change the air pressure supplied.   Note:  most air regulator valves work in the opposite manner of regular water valves.  Turning the knob clockwise should increase the air pressure... counter clockwise should decrease the pressure.       I hope this solution will bring you success.   Best Regards,  Michael Mittelsdorf
