I don't have another computer to try the software on, is there another way to try this. Or could it be any other problems??

  • cmissle79 Nov 14, 2010

i have been booting up using F12, then it reads the disks fine. The computer was running extremely slow so I decided to wipe it clean. We have had it for about four years and I have done nothing to it. I was trying to restore the factory settings. The package I received from Acer contained three disks. One system disk, which read fine, then two restore disks. I installed the first one without any complications. Then after the second disk goes in it gives me that message. I also restarted the computer, and it was like I hadn't done anything to it. I don't know if this further information is revelant but.....

does this work the same for windows vista

  • cmissle79 Nov 15, 2010

does this work with vista as well? i can get it to boot to the cd and it goes through all of the processes like it is trying to reformat. but nothing is happening. there is still the same stuff on the computer as there was to begin with.

  • cmissle79 Nov 15, 2010

should i just skip the system cd, and go straight to the restore cd

To format a hard disk its better to boot from the winxp cd first you transfer all the data you need from the drive C:\ to any other partitiion insert the bootable XP CD in to the CD drive now restart your computer while restarting press DEL in your keyboard in the boot select the CD drive on eselection you will see boot from cd press enter it will ask once more then press enter when the format section come you can format the partition you need and reinstall the win xp

Either your CD is faulty or your hard drive is faulty.

Try installing the software on another computer (without going too far, of course) to see if the same message displays. If it does, then you either have the wrong CD or the CD is faulty. If the message doesn't display, then your Acer's hard disk is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Check your CD to be certain that it's a system disk. If the disk came from Acer, contact them for a replacement. Also, run your computer hardware diagnostics (usually F12 upon boot) to see if a faulty hard drive is indicated.

  • NinaE Nov 15, 2010

Since the disks came from Acer, and one works, contact them for a replacement.

How to reformat laptop

  • 1

If you have the recovery cd, you can just pop-in the CD, select the reformat option and the installation process will continue automatically. Some laptop might have a special partition in the drive contains the operating system, drivers, etc. in case you want to reformat your laptop without the CD.

  • 2

If you don't have the recovery CD, you usually can request one from the manufacturer. Otherwise, if you want to do a clean install, make sure you download all the drivers for your laptop, this may includes: motherboard, chipset, graphic card, sound card, modem, network card. Once you do that, put in the OS CD and start installing.

If you decided to do a clean install without the recovery CD, it would be best to create partition on your harddrive first, so you can have dedicated partition for operating system and backup. The next time you want to reformat your harddrive, you can just reformat that particular partition ex. C:\

You have formatted the hard drive (containing Boot Manager) using recovery disk 1.

    Just insert disk 1 again.
Shut down the computer (press & hold the power button for a minute).

Follow the instructions that come up.

If it doesn't help, reseat the hard drive. (open the back cover, take out hard drive, reconnect it)
Also you may go to BIOS (tap F1 while booting) and set the cd-drive as the first boot device.

    Hope it helps.

How to reformat back to windows vista ?

You need a windows Vista disc. Insert the disc and follow the prompts. I would format the hard drive instead of upgrading do a new install. The best way would be to go into your bios and make sure the boot device order has the cd-rom booting before the hard drive. Then put the disc in and start the computer, when it says press any key to boot from cd hit any key and let it load and then follow the prompts to install.

This happens. Recovery/reinstallations sometimes takes many attempts. Only, you have to clean the CDs. Clean them with a soft cloth in + signs and not circular as one would think, CDs being circular. So, clean then top to bottom and right to left and vice versa.

If the backup and recovery disk are for that model of computer , just remove VISTA or Reformat the hard driver using software outside of Window, then reinstall all the Xp stuff, just as if you had a new hard drive. Save all personal files first, of course..

    Windows failed to start !...

You seem to know a bit about computer so I will give you a good detailed solution which might be of help. READ CAREFULLY

I guess that the main issue here is that your hard drive might be corrupted. I am also afraid that you might have erased or repartitioned your computer on a previous occasion if the recovery is not working. Please not that the Acer 5920 you mentioned has an automated system recovery system saved on to your hard drive. Did you by any chance Reformat the whole thing when you got the laptop? Because if thats the case and you removed the EISA partitions there is NO WAY you are going to get the recovery to work.

If you backed your system up when you first bought it and you created the CD's DVD's boot from them and recover the system that way. I am afraid that these will erase your C drive and will restore it to the original state when it was at time of backup. BEFORE all this you need to recover any data? In that case do the following:

    1. remove the hard drive if you have important data.
    2. Put it in a hard drive enclosure (which plugs in USB) and hook it up to another computer XP or VISTA doesn't matter both should work fine.
    3. Then backup the folders you would like to make a copy of onto the hard drive of the other computer.
    4. Then connect it back to the laptop (obviously make sure that when you remove and plug in this hard drive the laptop is off). And perform the recovery.

SOLUTION 2: If still all the above doesn't work.

If you do not need to backup anything there is no need to do the first 3 steps but you will need another computer

    1. Do steps 1 to 3 above to make sure that you backup everything at least
    2. Go to my computer on this to which you connected the drive computer Format the hard drive of the laptop (Making sure that before this step you backed up all the important data because you will lose it!)
    3. Perform full format (this will take a while) and format it as NTFS, while formatting see if you can hear any funny noises. It could be a good sign that the hard drive is out. During format you should almost hear nothing. if you hear a repeated CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK type of noise. Get another hard drive and repeat the above 3 wsteps
    4. Get hold of an XP or VISTA installation disk according to what you had on laptop
    5. Go to acer website and download all the drivers for the laptop you have and burn them on CD. If you already have a driver disc of the laptop you can skip this step but make sure that you have everything you need on it
    6. put hard drive back in Acer 5920
    7. Boot from the installation disk XP or VISTA. HINT KEEP the SAME OS if you had XP install XP ... if you had VISTA install VISTA
    8. When it asks for serial number look underneath the laptop and key in the serial number from the fancy label you have underneat. It should be a 20 numbers and letters separated by (e.g. xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx)
    9. Follow instructions and perform a full install
    10. Now install all the drivers you have on that disk. These are like small programs. Install one after the other until you install them all. Reboot when asked to reboot... Do not choose reboot later!
    11. Phew by now you should have a laptop working again. Isntall office antivirus and antispyware software and GET BACK the data from the other machine.....

The majority of these PCs have a recovery partition on the internal hard drive, here is the instructions for using it.
Recovering information using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) can perform a recovery from either an optional external hard
    drive or from recovery discs.
CAUTION: Using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) will completely erase hard drive contents
and reformat the hard drive. All files you have created and any software installed on the computer will
be permanently removed. When reformatting is complete, the recovery process will restore the operating
system, as well as the drivers, software, and utilities from the backup used for recovery.
To initiate recovery using WinRE, follow these steps:
NOTE: This process will take several minutes.
    1. If possible, back up all personal files.
    2. Restart the computer, and then press f8 before the Windows operating system loads.
    3. Select Repair your computer.
NOTE: The "Repair your computer" option is displayed only if the WinRE partition is intact. If the
option is not displayed, refer to “Recovering information using a Windows Vista operating system
    DVD (purchased separately).”
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Select your user name, type your password (if applicable), and then click OK.
    7. If you are using recovery discs, insert the last disc of the recovery disc backup set.
NOTE: Inserting the last disc of the backup set confirms the presence of a valid backup. If you
insert any other disc, the backup will not be recognized.
    – or –
If you are using an optional external hard drive, connect it to the computer.
    8. Click Windows Complete PC Restore.
    9. Follow the on-screen instructions.

this is getting long , so ill will post more steps in comment.....

    Hello Humanold,

Please check the following recovery steps:

Full recovery by using recovery partition:

    1. Reboot the notebook PC.
    2. Keep tapping F11 when the Compaq logo displays.
    3. When the Recovery Manager appears, click Next.
    4. When prompted to use the Microsoft System Restore program, select No and click Next.
    5. When prompted to use the System Recovery, select Yes and click Next.
    6. Select the option to perform the recovery without backing up files and click Next.
    7. Upon completion of the process, recovery will display "The PC Recovery was successfully completed".
The recovery process will return your PC to the factory image.

Full recovery by using recovery disks:

    1. Open the disc drive door and turn off the PC.
    2. Insert the first Recovery disc in the disc drive and close the door.
    3. Press the power button to turn on the PC.
    4. The HP Recovery Manager window appears during the boot process.
If the HP Recovery Manager can access the hard drive, a prompt is displayed to backup the user files before continuing the recovery.
If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix the system errors, the HP Recovery Manager will overwrite all the data and reconfigure the entire hard drive to its original condition.

    5. Follow the prompts to insert any additional recovery discs in the disc drive.
