Did you install the sound drivers. If you do not have the disk, they have them on the E-machine site.

Here are some things that you can try.
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} Sound Problems

Check other connection ports for your speakers. Make sure your speakers are plugged up and turned on. You can go to your sound settings in your control panel and it has steps for you to check to see why your speakers are not working properly. Make sure that you have the drivers installed. Look in your device manager for this. If your device manager has a question mark by your sound drivers then the drivers are not installed. I hope that I hope that I helped you Solve your problem.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} Driver Install;
Look on the Company site under drivers and downloads. You will have to put in your model first and then the serial number sometimes. After you find your product you will find the drivers and more programs if they have any.
After you download the driver you might have to put it in a folder for it to be stored in. After you put it in a folder, unzip it in that folder and it should have an .exe file. Click on this and it should do the install. If it does not do your install you can go to the Device manager and click on the device and tell it to install or upgrade the driver. Then you will need to direct it to the folder where you have the unzipped file. This should correct your problem.
You can click on my name from now on and I will do my best to answer your question within a day.
I can't fix this for you, but if I helped you get it fixed, please rate it as a fixya. I did more than try; I sent you exactly to where you could get the driver and explained how to install it.

If you print out these directions you should never have any problem with a driver again.

If you need more help, feel free to keep asking, but keep the original information so I can see it.

Windows doesn't recognize my sound card and I can't locate a driver, for it. I don't think the sound card is bad, as it worked before I reformatted my harddrive and added the software.

Install the latest Sound driver from the website.

link: support.dell.com
Click on "Drivers & Downloads",
Enter your "Service Tag",
Locate the right driver, download it.. & Install it.

Hope it works....

No sound

When you go from Windows to Linux (Ubuntu) you will have problems as the hardware and drivers were made for Windows and not Linux. Ubuntu does not always automatically pick up your hardware. Here's what you can do to make it easier. The latest Ubuntu is 8.10 so you need to download the latest version. Then once that is downloaded you need to look at the top bar, there will be a red arrow asking you to download the latest patches. Take those steps as it will bring you current version and current software and may allow your sound card to work.
