Question about Toshiba SD-KV550
I just picked this up used. It appears to be in very good condition, however when I attempt to watch a DVD it says there's no disk. I opened the case to see if there was an obvious problem, and the DVD player spins the disk 1/4 turn three times, and then stops. I'm no tech. but this appears to be the problem. Is the motor weak? Or maybe the belt's slipping? And finally, is this something that I should mess with? I know these things are pretty cheap. If there's no simple fix I'll probably just replace it. Thanks you guys!
Have you tried cleaning the lens? It may well be that the lens is dirty from the previous owner more so if he was a smoker, try a little cd lens cleaner on a clean cotton bud rub the lens gently and blow over it, you can also buy a cd lens cleaner kit, but to be honest with you, you can pick up a brand new one at asda from £15.00 upwards and that comes with a yrs warranty. please be careful when cleaning the lens, I hope that this helps you out please let me know if it has worked

Most of the time when it spins the disc just a little, it is trying to get a reflection or focus lock on the disc. The laser pick up is blind, it can't see the disc so it will not spin it up fast. A DVD or CD player can look perfect and still have a major problem.
It is possible that the spindle motor is bad, but more likely the laser is bad.
There is one other possibility that will make it worth your time to check. since it is pretty much a disposable product, you can try to clean the lens on the laser yourself and not worry if you damage it.
Take a Q-tip and wet it just slightly with a little windex or alcohol.
Then you just rub the lens of the laser very lightly a couple of times and then use the dry side of the Q-tip to dry it off.
You want to be careful not to use too much windex or alcohol because it can spill over into the tracking and focus coils and cause problems. Also, don't press the Q-tip ******* the lens, you can also damage the coils that way.
You can identify the lens easy because it is small and is looks like glass and is circular about a quarter inch across it.
I hope this helps you and if it does please give me a good rating.

In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD . If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.
The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor.
Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board
