Canoscan n640 not work in windows 7

Canon stopped supporting this scanner after XP. The available software and drivers are here: http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Consumer_Products/products/scanners/Others/N640P_ex.aspx?type=download&page=1 .

Depending on the version of Win7 on your computer, you can try one of the following workarounds. To check your version, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System. If it says x64, you have a 64-bit version of Windows 7. Otherwise, it is the 32-bit version.
1) If you have the 32-bit Win7, you can try the compatibility mode. Download the driver or full software from the Canon site and right click on the installer. Then choose Properties and then the Compatibility tab. Turn on Run program as Compatible with the appropriate OS. Then right click again on the installer and choose Run as Administrator. Then check if the program itself is running in the compatibility mode by right clicking again and choosing Properties. This may not work.

2) The option that will work for all versions of Win7 is to use a computer (virtual, dual-boot, or true second machine) with an older version of Windows installed. If you have Win7 Pro or Ultimate (or upgrade to them), you can create a virtual XP computer for free. Download and install Virtual PC and XP mode from Microsoft. Install them in order. Then install the XP software from the Canon site in the virtual computer and it will work. (Other virtual computer programs are Parallels and VMWare.) All of the other options will require a licensed version of the older Windows OS. Please note that the virtual computer can't share files directly with the main computer. You'll need to save files to external or removable media (optical media or flash drive, for example) to share them. Also a printer cannot be installed on both the real and virtual computers at the same time. You will be prompted to uninstall one set of drivers if you try.

I hope this helps.

(the above suggestions assume you do not want to replace the scanner which would be faster.)

(1) Is it possible to have a bi-amp hookup to speakers that has twin wire lugs when playing just two front speakers, and how is it done ?. (2) can a regular microphone work in the microphone jack to...

1) Not with this unit. WHY bother? Sending identical program to two drivers over separate wires is the same as sending it over one pair.

2) No. Insertion of a microphone tells the unit you're doing setup. The microphone picks it up and sends it to a microprocessor for evaluation. The sound from the mic never finds its way out to a speaker. THAT would be a feedback loop and the tweeters wouldn't like it. (sizzle sizzle)

Surround Speakers will not work

Perhaps you have the live wire in the wrong connector from the speakers? They should be color coded. I would check that first. And if you have moved, they are most likely in different positions, you'll have to rerun the audio setup for the surround sound. You should have a separate microphone to use for that that plugs in to the system.

I have a Toshiba A305 with built-in Harman Kardon speakers which aren't working properly. I do get some sound but it seems to be coming from the back of the computer; & isn't as good as it was. I...

All fixed, thanks to Maanita. Problem was that I had a USB microphone (gooseneck Logitech AK5370) plugged in for my Skype calls. Not knowing anything about audio, I didn't realize the mic was interfering with my laptop speakers -- assumed turning off the mic was sufficient. Also, Maanita re-installed the sound drivers, which I wouldn't have known how to do. It sure beat calling someone at $60 an hour + expenses to come out here. What a delight to find Fixya! Thanks again!

My internal microphone doesn't work

If you are refering to the internal microphone on your computer then try this. Open up your windows sound recorder from Start - Program - Accesories - Entertainment. Hit the record button and talk or yell something if you would like. You should see recorded sound waves in the middle of your sound recorder. If you do not see the recorded waves this might mean that your microphone is turned off. To turn it on just Double click on the little speaker icon on your taskbar at the bottom right of your screen. The volume control window will open. Click on options then properties. Next check the small round recording button. Now make sure the microphone box is checked then click ok. Now a window will open that will show your microphone recording level. Move the slider up about half way and make sure to check the small "Select" box near the bottom of the slider. Open up sound recorder and try to record again. If this does not work your internal microphone may not be working or your computer may not have come with a built in microphone. There are some very cheap external mics on the market that sound very good. If you are doing any serius recording you may want to invest in a USB microphone. The USB mic should come with it's own software and setup should be pretty simple. I hope I have been helpful.

My acer aspire 5920 is making alot of noise the built in microphone does not seem to turn off

ok i had the same problem up until today and i found a post on a site that really helped me out i had this problem for about two months and was very close the sending it into acers repair center but all it was, was a setting in the audio manager ok here is what you need to do go to control panel, then go to hardware and sound, and then go to manage audio devices under sound then go to recording then click on microphone and go to properties, then go to levels and you should see two settings microphone volume and and microphone boost if your microphone boost is set to +20 which it prolly is just slide it down to zero and wow your problem is fixed. Im not really sure what program might change this setting but acer should really check into it and your system shouldnt let programs change things such as this cause this is a very important setting for having a wonderful entertainment experience. well i hope this helps and all the credit here goes to original poster at http://wynddancer.livejournal.com/22092.html
