SOURCE: motor in dimplex fire/heater not turning

Hello. It could be possible that a piece or some of the foil that gives the flame effect has fallen down on the motor, that creates the heat. This could be causing the noise. I would not think this is an electrics problem.

I would ensure the electric fire is disconnected from any power supply and either open the heater myself or get a electrical specialist to have a look. Then you will see exactly what is happening. A piece of foil may be visible which is catching the motor.

If you decide to tackle the problem yourself write down how to put the heater back together as you take each part out. These parts would be covers etc. It can easily get confusing. That is important.

Right off hand, I'd say the light bulbs are burned out and need to be replaced. The model you listed comes in 2 editions, one with a misting effect and the other without. In both, the bulbs are replaced the same way - by opening the sump door to access the bulbs.

To further help you, I have included a link to the Owners Manual for your model. You may download and print it for future reference.

Can I operate the flame effect on the fire without the heat?
All our Optiflame and Opti-myst fires can be operated on a flame-effect only setting, as can the flickering flame effect on our freestanding bar fires.

Is the flame effect expensive to run?
No, to run the flame effect involves powering light bulbs and a small electric motor and in most cases costs no more than a couple of pence an hour. Some of our fires have LED lamps fitted which are even more energy efficient.

Some have bulbs, some have LED.
Example calculations:
Using UK standard average price of electricity of 14p/kWh (source: Energy Saving Trust Feb 2015)
Optiflame LED flame effect only (eg Danesbury) = 0.1p every hour
Optiflame conventional bulb, effect only (eg Cheriton) = 2p every hour
Opti-myst, flame effect only (eg Oakhurst) = 3p every hour
Opti-V single screen = 0.5p every hour
2kW fan heater, on constantly (no thermostat) = 28p every hour

Optiflame lightbulbs for sale. Remove the coals and check for bulbs.

I have a Dimplex Small Electralog Stove Fireplace CS1205, it's two years old but barely used until this winter. A couple months ago, the flame stopped working and now the heat keeps turning off after 5...

More than likely, the interior of the unit needs to be cleaned. When it's in operation, it sucks dust and link into the fan and heater elements. When it's not, spiders love to go into and build nests. If badly clogged, it can cause the heating element to over heat and shut off. Carefully, removing the back panel of the stove will give you access to just about everything. As far as the flame is concerned, the bulbs may need replacing. Although, it's unusual for all of them to go bad at one time. You or your nephew can replace them after the unit is cleaned. A vacuum that has a hose, brush attachment and crevice tool, will work well in the cleaning of the interior. Be sure to turn the Master ON/Off Switch to OFF & Unplug the unit, before attempting and maintenance on it.

If after performing all of the above, the unit still doesn't work properly, contact Dimplex USA, Technical Service 888-346-7539, for further advice.

Hope this helps to solve your problem. Please let me know.

The bulb was out so I replaced it but the new one is not lighting up,I can hear the motor going for the flame effect but I hav'nt got any light, have tried 3 bulbs, what shall I do next?

Well, Shirley, you have quite a mystery here. I suspect that the flame affect circuit may have cut out. Turn the Master ON/OFF switch to OFF and unplug the unit for 12 to 15 minutes. Doing this will give he unit a chance to reset itself. If that doesn't solve your problem contact Dimplex USA, Technical Service 888-346-7539 for further advice.
