Question about Goodman Heating & Cooling

Pilot lights ups and runs normal then gas shuts off while fan or blower runs. there is a red light blinking. this unit has a temp stick or something on the far left of the glow plug that i have sanded very gentley. what else could it be.

I would say that what you sanded is probably the flame sensor. If burner is on for a short time and then shut right back off I would first check connection to this sensor and if that does't help I would replace the sensor. Hope this helps. Thanks

My 32000 btu unit lights and runs when it reaches desired temp and shuts off the pilot stays on and you hear a click then a minute later a second click and the pilot light shuts off.


The clicking you are hearing is the gas valve trying to open but because the pilot light is out the valve shut back off. Sounds like the thermocouple is bad on the unit. The thermocouple sits net to the pilot light and allows the gas valve to open. Hope this helps.

How many degrees before it reaches desired temp, does it shut off? A thermostat is designed to shut the furnace off a couple/ few degrees before it reaches set temp. It has what is called a heat anticipater, which shuts the burner down, and lets the blower use the remaining heat from the heat exchanger to bring it up to desired temp making it more efficient. If it is more than a few degrees, replace the thermostat. You can jump out the red and white wires to confirm the faulty thermostat. If by doing this, the furnace never shuts down, until you separate the red and white wires. That confirms a faulty thermostat. Hope this helps someone.

Hi i have a york diamond heater in my attic. I went up in the attic and revomed the grill and the four burners are not coming on. it clicks and u smeal gas but it will shut off. the little blower motor...


If your furnace uses an electrical glow element to light the pilot light, the Glow Element will need to be replaced. Glow Elements are general used on 90+ High Efficiency Gas Furnaces.

If it uses a standing pilot light rather than the Electrical Glow Element, you need to manually relight the pilot. Since I can't see your furnace, you will need to locate and read your Owners Manual on how to do this or look in the side or inside the pilot light compartment for instructions on how to light it.
Be sure you have stick match or a butane grill lighter with you before you try to light it.

If it's a manual pilot ... if after lighting it, it doesn't hold when turned to the ON position, more thank likely you'll need to have the Thermocouple replaced.

And above all, BE CAREFUL. If you don't feel comfortable lighting a gas furnace, call a professional.

Furnace cuts off before reaching set temp.


You can make sure it is not the thermostat by crossing or jumping the R and W terminals (or associated wires) together. This will keep the furnace calling for heat. As it is approaching set temperature, get in front of the furnace and inspect the air filter to make sure it is clean, watch the control module for any error codes that may be turning off the system prematurely.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

No blinks normal running igniter glows gas comes on wont run


Check for 24 volts across the gas valve when Ignitor is glowing. If no, bad board. If yes, bad gas valve or blockage.

That blinking light is an error code. It will blink two different numbers such as three blinks, pause, then four blinks. Once you get the combination of blinks, look at the wiring diagram pasted on one of the panels for a diagnostic chart. It may help you pin point the problem area.

Flip the lower panel over and look for a wiring diagram. On that diagram there will be a diagnostic chart. Let me know what 5 blinks represent. Then I want you to read on.

Legacy heater won't stay light


Hi, Lets see if I can help you out. You have a wall furnace with a forced air fan, 120volts I am sure. It could be a couple of things happening. You say the pilot will light and the burners fire, but after the heat exchanger reaches it's fan on temp, all just shuts down? Does the blower ever come on? It sounds to me that this unit is shutting off on a safety such as the high limit switch.On wall units that don't use a blower, the limit is located in the upper section of the furnace when you remove the cover. If your fan motor never comes on at all, the heat will open this switch and shut down everything.Not knowing if the fan motor is any good, i am just giving you some ideas what would happen if it was bad, shorted, open windings ect.If the motor never comes on then check to see if you have power to it.If you do, then the motor is faulty. If the motor runs, then go to you're high limit. It is a small round flat disc, black wire in and out back to gas valve.Take a jumper wire and jump across this limit and see if it works for you. If so, it would be worth the cost of replacing the limit.If the blower is bad, replace the furnace.Make sure your thermostat is ok also. You can also jump out the stat to see if the unit comes on and stays on. Jump the red and white, you should have only two.If you do this and it runs, do it several times. If all works well, then replace the stat. So there are several things you can check yourself. Please let me know about the blower motors condition. Good Luck,

Rheem gas furnace pilot lights, but no burners or fan


If the burners do not fully ignite, the sensor will shut the furnace down. The lack of sufficient burner flame is a gas valve or gas pressure problem within the valve.
Replacing the gas valve with the original one may get you going. I surely suggest a professional service company for safety reasons and a thorough inspection. A 20 year old furnace is past it's normal life span.
