Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

1 Answer

When I run the washer, there is a foul smell. The clothes don't have it, but it fills the room - how do I get rid of it. I've read the top loading machine directions, but don't think I can use them with the Calypso. Please help.

Most likely this smell is coming from under the wash plate/agitator. Pop off the center agitator thing(item #1 on parts diagram) use flat screwdriver) then remove the screws to pull out entire wash plate. Observe underneath for debris/cloths. Whirlpool states that all small items be washed in a lingerie bag to prevent this on this washer model. Also us a good washer cleaner and run a hot cleaning cycle to clean the inside of washer.

Why do my clothes have horrible smell

Front loader? Welcome to our hell.

Seriously though - it's not that bad. You need to have a different mindset with these machines. First, throw away your old detergent. You've GOT to use the type with the HE logo on it. Really. There is a difference.

Wipe out any standing water in the gasket between the drum and door opening after the last load of the day.

Leave the door open slightly to allow air to flow around between washes.

Open the other doors for detergent, bleach, etc. between laundry days.

Don't use liquid fabric softener. Use dryer sheets instead.

Run a small, empty load with hot water and bleach ONLY. No clothes, as your last load for the days that you do laundry.

Use a product like Affresh, once or twice to rid the washer of existing smells. You can use Affresh any time the smells start coming back - and follow the suggestions above.

I hope this helps you as much as it helped me when I learned it! Good luck!

I have the front load washing machine wm2010cw. The washer just has a foul odor and I can not seem to get rid of it. I have tried using Affresh and had a tech come to see what the problem was but all I got...

If you have a smelly front loading clothes washing machine, toss in a Finish Geltabs (the ones that are all liquid) and run the machine on a hot wash cycle, medium to heavy load (to get more water in the tub) with no clothes in the machine. You don't need to use much of a spin cycle so set it on low. The washing machine will come clean and even the moldy spots on the rubber gaskets will disappear. A second treatment may be needed if the smell is not completely gone. We tried everything from vineger to bleach to baking soda to borax to commercially available odor removers from Whirlpool and Tide. Nothing worked until I hit on this idea. It's cheap, easy and can be done anytime your machine needs a refreshing. I used the orange Geltabs but any fragrance would be fine. Keep the door on your washer open a bit when possible to air out to help preclude those nasty smells.

My washer has a sour smell how do i get rid of smell

It sounds like you've got mildew somewhere in the washer. I'd recommend running a cycle, just like you would with a large load of clothes but WITHOUT the clothes, and use a full cup of bleach instead of detergent. You could let the basin fill and then turn the washer off to let the solution soak for an hour or so, and then complete the cycle. Bleach kills and bunch of other stinky stuff too. Repeat if necessary.
Good luck!

My Neptune front load washer has a foul odor. I have tried the HE tablets, wiping it, etc. but it smells bad. When I spin it with my hand, there is water in the background. How do I get rid of the smell?...

Add 3 cups of Sugar Soap concentrate. Then fill the machine and leave it for 24 hrs.
Then put it through wash cycle with no clothes.

If not fixed........machine has to be stripped apart and manually cleaned.

The clothes smell if left in the washer wet overnight

Wet clothes should not be left in the washer over night as mold will develop and cause a moldy odor. You could run the load through a rinse cycle with fabric softener or baking soda to get rid of the odors.

Musty smell, but can't tell from where

I have the same problem with a 3 month old ge front loading washer.after 1 month it started off smelling musty..I thought it was my imagination, now at 3 months old our clothes smell so bad I think we might just have to buy new clothes! everytime I wash a load the clothes smell worse and now you can even smell it just walking into our closet 2 floors up. A new washing washing machine should NOT be doing this! so far leaving the door open in between washes has helped a little but I plan on tipping it back and finding the hidden filter today. Isn't it lovely that they don't mention a filter that needs monthly cleaning or it's location in the manuals?!

I had similar problem, the front door seal can trap small items, socks, handtowels. I didnt figure this out for some months, each load of clothes had a foul, mildew smell, Check door seal for trapped clothes, run intermittent cycles with bleach only, no clothes, be sure to leave door open when not in use to air out , this will reduce smell.
