Our simple 3116 won't zigzag stitch, the needle is off to the right and will not do any other stitches. Help!!

It won't do straight stitch?
Take the needle out... see if it is moving the fabric when you press on the presser foot. If it is not, then you need to raise the feet (it's under the accessory box/table face. If it does move the fabric. Make sure your machine is set to Zig Zag. again without needle... sew. Does the needle bar move? change to straight stitch, does the needle bar move? If it does I think you have the wrong size needle. If it does not, I'm afraid your plastic machine has broken... take it in for repair.

TRADITION 2250 SINGER SEWING MACHINE HOW TO ZIG ZAG

From the pattern selector (the bigger dial), select the zig-zag stitch. Then, using the stitch length dial (the smaller dial), adjust the stitch length. The closer your stitch length is to "0", the more dense will your zig-zag stitch be.

Stitch length for zig zag satin binding 8mm equals what number?

Neat zigzag stitches are usually achieved at "2.5" or below.
Closed up zigzag stitches (close together) are referred to as a
satin stitch its likely you will want to set for 1.5 or at most 2. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/3116-singer-parts-SEWING+MACHINE-manual Look for page 40 in the owners book or scroll down and if you see numbers not on the page but on the scroll bar look for 47. It has some great pitures that can help you out.

Does the singer 3116 come with a blind stitch for hemming

Most sewing machines come with a blind hem stitch. It is the one that looks like several small zig-zags then occasionally a large one, or several straight stitches then a large zig-zag. Either will result in an invisible hem.

Some machines have a special foot but it is not necessary, mine does not. There is however a special way of folding the fabric.

I am trying to do stitch L which is a zig zag and it is doing that stitfch on the wrong side and on the side that you will see it is not doing the zig zag. How did this happen?

What do you have your width set at? Totally rethread your machine and put in a new needle. Clean and oil. I am hoping that the thread is tangled and that is causing the problem for you. Otherwise, it could be your timing, which is not a do it yourselfer job.

The needle on my brand new singer simple sewing machine is not centered for straight stiching and only moves to the center when you set it on zig-zag mode. Is this how it's supposed ot be or is it...

I don't know the machine but most likely this machine is made for quilting like most of them these days. (One of mine is like this too.) It is set to the left of center. It's not defective. You might look in your manual to clarify it or call the dealer. If they think you want a new one, they will check the answer for you!

Stich setting

It is usually 2.5 or mid-way between 2 and 3. Set it longer - closer to 3 when stitching thick fabrics.

Make a sample of the stitches by sewing on a folded scrap of plain cotton or muslin and mark the settings used for future reference.

Do the same for the zig-zag settings and this will save a lot of time and guessing.

Buttonhole making instructions from the manual of the Singer Simple do not seem to be accurate. The tension is incorrect and the machine is only sewing down one side without creating the satin stitch/...

Some machines will start out by sewing a straight stitch all the way around the buttonhole area first and then will zigzag/satin stitch along the sides. Bar tacks will be the last stitches sewn - hope this helps!

Stitch pattern is wrong

Here's the manual,

http://safemanuals.com/user-guide-instructions-owner-manual/SINGER/3116-_M

Lets see if we can do some troubleshooting.

Have you checked your needle (size, for thread your using, material)
It sounds like a tension/settings issue, but could be as simple as poor thread quality. try changing the thread, and rewinding the bobbin. If using a silky material remember you need to back that up and make it stiff.
If this and a resetting of tension doesnt work,

Check your left side right side balance (pg 57)
Check page 84 on trouble shooting
