Question about Panasonic NN-T990SA Microwave Oven

1 Answer

After setting the time cook on my NN-T990SA, it shuts off within 3 seconds of hitting start. This happens almost every time and the microwave will not cook. Can this problem be fixed or should I consider scrapping it and get a new one?

The oven shuts down almost immediately after the inverter board - the one that powers the magnetron - gets activated. This is a big fault, repairing it can be done strictly only by a specialized repair shop and because of that it will be expensive.
So yes, i think it's time to cut your losses and get a new one.

There are a number of possible causes.

My timer stops after 5 seconds.

Since no model number was posted, I have to give a general answer.

Since it was posted under Panasonic, I'll assume it's a Panasonic.

See if one of these describes what's happening:
  • Put in time, push start and unit runs for 2 seconds, relay clicks, unit goes off. Cook time on display goes off and clock time comes back. Bad upper interlock switch and charred connector
If so, see http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/safety.txt
http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/disassembly.txt
http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/doorsw.txt

Otherwise, if the digital programmer circuit / controller does not get a feedback signal from the inverter for a period of 3 seconds, the controller will stop the cook cycle.

It may be a loose connection in the wiring between the inverter, magnetron, and/or control board, or maybe one of those components has failed.

If it stops after 7 seconds, it has a problem with the inverter.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced in inverters, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

Panasonic microwave, returns to clock setting after 3 seconds

this sounds like one of two things to me it maybe if the unit has inverter on the front of it the magnetron or the inverter itself both repairs can be expensive if its both and that does happen around 80.00for the magnetron and poss not much change out of 120.00-150.00 for the inverter sorry its best with that fault to take it to a shop or call an engineer unless you are confident with this sort of unit its best left to a pro

Microwave shuts off before time elapes

If it stops at 16 seconds and is a sensor model, it probably has a defective humidity sensor.

The best place to order Panasonic parts is Tritronics. You can also call them at 866-779-5835.

If you prefer, you can find an authorized Panasonic servicer here.

My microwave says "child" and won't play anymore

Not sure of the TT series models but for the NN series models the procedure is as follows:-

If "Child" is displayed in the display window, then the child safety lock is on.

To remove the child safey lock, press the "Stop/Reset" button 3 times in fairly short succession (less than 3 seconds). The time of day or just the Colon sign (:) is then displayed

If you later want to apply the Child safety lock, then, when the time of day (or colon sign) is displayed, press "Start" 3 times (again in short succession).

Hope this helps
