What sounds like sparking could be a head crash. If it is a head crash then you are basically finished with the drive. They all go sometime. The only safe way is to have another backup drive and keep a current second copy of all information which you must save. Even this procedure is not completely safe. The hard drive should not make any noticeable sound (not more than a fan sound). If it does, then it is probably dead or about to die. If the information on the drive is IMPORTANT, then you can contact a data disc recovery site which can help you with removing most of the data from a crashed disc. replace the floppy drive it sounds as if the drive motor is bad the hum is a inactive drive motor when a floppy is good it will usualy click as it comes on along with a green indicator llight
