Question about Breezaire WKL 4000 Wine Cooler

2 Answers

The unit is about 4years old and has begun to run continuosley, with freezing water under it. We were able to make it stop by turning the screw for a few days while we tried to figure out what was going on. Had a local A/C man look at it, but since it is a sealed unit, he was not able to check it internally. Now the unit will not turn off unless the power cord is unplugged. It still cools, although I think the humidity control is not correct. Sending it back to the factory is not an option, and we are willing to void the warranty if parts, such as a thermostat, would be available. Are this machines repairable by ordinary technicians, or do they use special parts? Jane Hall

Thanks for your prompt reply. It is frustrating not to know what to do, and not wanting to buy a new unit if possible. I am not sure of the model #, (it looks like the smaller of the two pictured) but will get it when the repair guy is here to go into the machine. He was concerned that it might be one of several problems, but now that it's gone on for a couple of weeks, I do think it's the thermostat or control or some part of it. The compressor seems to be keeping the wine room cool, although as I said, the humidity is lower than it should be. Having several thousand dollars worth of wine there (it is a small roughly 5' x 10' insulated room), we are not anxious to lose it. Jane Hall

Thanks for the extra comment. I've printed it out and will show it to the A/C technician who was recommended to me by the dealer who sold me the Breezaire unit. I'm not sure he will know what the problem is until he gets into the machine, but knowing that parts are available is a big help. Wish there were a Breezaire repair guy right here but that's too much to hope for.

I am now unplugging the unit for several hours, then plugging it back in. It does run constantly, and there is frost underneath it. It is mounted flush into the outside wall, and the unit sticks out into the wine room 12=15". resting on a shelf, so the water drips and frost are on the underside of a wooden shelf. Hopefully once it is out of the cabinet it will be apparent where and what is wrong. Thank you again, Jane Hall

Yes, the information was helpful. I will give it to a technician who is coming out tomorrow. Thanks again, Jane Hall

Check he frost pattern on your evaporator. That is a plate sensing control and if the system develops a freon leak you will have frost on the beginning of the cycle (middle bottom and travels to the left, then across the top middle, then to the right and back to the lower middle) but not at the end where the thermistor senses temperature. This will cause the unit to run almost continuously no-matter what setting you have it on. If this is so, you need to have the leaking component repaired/replaced. You will not want to let your unit run like this since the longer you do..the more components will get damaged. If you are still with-in your warranty period, contact your dealer to initiate service. If not, contact any appliance repair shop you trust in your area.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Okay I will not talk about anyone, but if he was worth his salt he would have been able to check this with out entering the sealed system.
Yes it sounds as you have a control problem. No you can get a control through Bi Coastal Appliance Parts @ 1-800-673-1262 and ask for a "Ranco" A12-1506 cold control.
If you need any further e- mail me

Water puddling in bottom of freezer which freezes

Tool needed: Screw drive with the insert tips can be used to remove screws use the end of the screw driver with out a philips bit or flat tip inserted. Remove frozen food to camping coolers igloo ice chests or coleman ice chests or a freezer in your home . Remove all racks and baskets to expose movable panels at the inside back of the freezer compartment.
Notice the 1/4" hex nuts remove the screws holding the panels at the back wall. Clear built up ice carefully. You now can take out the panels and expose the fan and cooling cool that creates the cold temperature on the freezer side.

Near the bottom is an aluminum U shaped pan with a shallow funnel indentation at the bottom. Clear ice from the funnel pan and inside bottom carefully. Sharp objects break ice nicely and can pierce the interior surfaces . Look under the cooling coil and at the back wall is a screw holding this soft metal catch pan in place. Remove the screw and carefully tip and slid out the catch pan tray. You now have access to the drain hole that is frozen closed or clogged. Place a large towel in the bottom of the freezer area to catch water. Pour hot tap water a half cup at a time into the drain area. Do not use boiling water the plastic inside a refrigerator or freezer can not tolerate high temperature. I have melted a freezer compartment in a GE with a hair dryer. Remove the water with a clean reag and add more warm or hot water repeat until the drain allows water to flow. stop adding water or the evaporation pan under the refrigerator will over flow.
Check the refrigerator about once a year for the freezeup problem or keep an eye on the bottom of the freezer looking for the build up of water frozen on the inside floor. The other solution get a new refrigerator.

Ice maker freezing up

The problem is in the water valve.
The water supply line going to the Ref is connected to a water valve. This valve is not shutting off completely which causes water to drip into the ice maker. This dripping will freeze and eventually completely block the fill tube in the freezer.

Freezing in Fridge

Does the compressor run continually? Will it turn off when the thermostat is turned all the way down?. If it runs all the time it is possible the defrost timer is not working. It is located under the unit where the water tray is. Along one side or even at the front there will be a black plastic box with a shaft coming out that with a flat tip screw driver can be turned only one direction. Try turning it slowly to see if the compressor shuts off. Also mark the shafts position and see if it has changed after a few hours. It should. If not it is bad. If the unit doesn't shut off when the thermostat is lowered all the way, it could be the problem.... Start with the defrost timer first...

Ice maker freezing up

If it is only the fill tube that is freezing up, or getting full of ice, than your water valve is leaking (letting drops of water thru to your ice maker and filling the icemaker fill tube up and freezing). If this is the case, replace the dual water valve (part # 1071263) located in the back of the refrigerator, just follow the water line from your wall into the refrigerator. Make sure you turn off the water to the refrigerator and also unplug it. The dual water valve is the one that has two water lines, one going to the icemaker and one going to the water dispenser. On this model, I think you only have one water valve. On some you have two, the primary water valve and a secondary water valve (the dual valve). If this is your case, I would highly recommend you replace both. As far as the Refrigerator side freezing things up, I think that is a whole different issue. Please post back.
