I wouldn't waste your money on it, I would just take out the IDE notebook hard drive, and use it as an external mobile hard drive. However, if its a Hitachi, I wouldn't trust having your important data on it. No offense, I have just worked on many Hitachi hard drives, the mechanical design to the Hitachi hard drives pitiful.

You should be on firmware version 2.1.04 (WMDRMPD:10.1) If connected to your computeer or on WiFi then :-
Firmware + Plugins
and click on....Online Firmware Update
This version of the firmware does allow some videos. Unfortunately if the videos come up with blank screen with a red F9 in the middle this signifies a version of FlashPlayer not yet supported. We just have to wait and see if Archos are still going to support the 605 with more firmware updates or if their hands fare too ull with the new Archos 5 Android.
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code (104) on it These are the steps i followed
* Use the computer for this process that you always used for this archos
* Download the firware Upgrade 2.1
* Plug the Archos to Pc
* When the white screen comes up do format
* Wait until all done then put the firmware in to the root sector of the Archos
* Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc first and then unplug the cable.
* Do not pick any option on the Archos screen
* Just turn it off from the power button by holding it until it turns off
* Wait about 5 minutes and plug in back to pc
it will come up with white screen again but this time it will start
Update you will see the progress bar moving wait until it is all done
and it will shut off. Turn it back on Your archos will be back to normal.
When you go to download from Archos site it will explain how to download depending upon how your device pops up on your Pc.

I have a similar problem. I received my Archos 605 two weeks ago and thought the product was awesome. However, I had to call customer service for the plug-ins I was supposed to receive free. I was dropped twice after waiting for 12 - 15 minutes each time. On my third call, I finally received customer service after waiting an additional 12 minutes. The woman was very nice where she finally got me 6 of the 7 the rebate specified.
Today, 09/14/09, I had to call Archos for the broken screen which was a 20 minute wait. It is NOT under warranty and will cost me $155.00 plus shipping. I paid $154.99 total for the unit brand new.
Customer service stated sorry. DO NOT PURCHASE AN ARCHOS -- BY A IPOD. I HAVE LEARNED!
after reseting my archos 605 my touch screen has stoped functioning properly i youch 1 part of the screen and it keep going to my menu bar i hit video it will open the menu bar or any part of the screen i touch it opens the menu bar
