Problems connecting to internet with Vista

I recently did a system restore on my computer and now cannot connect the computer to the internet even though our router and modem are working. I installed the drivers disk that came with my computer so I am unsure why I still cannot connect to the internet.

Does your computer have a wireless card that it uses to access the router, or does it have an ethernet cable. Also is the router connected to this computer that you did the system restore on, or to another computer?

If you make any software changes like an internet explorer update or any kind of software related to web browsing maybe it blocked your internet access, try to do a system restore, what's your OS (XP,VISTA, 7), you need to go on start then all programs, then accessories, then system tools, then click on system restore, once the window pops up choose restore my system to an earlier point, you are going to see a calendar, well it depends on your OS version, choose one date that yo remember using the internet, then it'll do it by itself, a restart and it'll let you know if the restore was possible, sometimes a virus can block your internet access, as soon as you restore run a full antivirus analysis to make sure your computer is clean, then try to browse, another option is to delete your cookies.

1. how is your computer for virus and software? I've a had customer who was being unabled to use internet because his antivirus kept his computer way too protected?

2. if your antivirus is updated check your computer for viruses and malware.. for malware use, spybot, adaware se and a-schedule

3. has it always been like that? if not try to revert to a previous time with system restore and try to remember how the problem started and post your findings.

4. did you test with another cable? did you check another port in your router? (it only says you concluded that so I don't know if you actually tested with other cables and another port, if you haven't please do.)

5 try updating the driver of your network adapter:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?ref=step&st=browse&platform=10021&model=11796&os=10406&type=10095
I'm assuming you were using xp so change it to vista if your're using vista and look for an updated driver that match what you got.

Dell desktop -- ethernet connection

Whenever I get a limited or no connection message I right click on the network icon in the taskbar that's giving the message and select repair. Sometimes that doesn't work and I select disable then enable again. You can also do this from network connections that may be found in Control Panel.

Make sure you have DHCP selected. To do this right click on your ethernet connection in network connections, select properties. Scroll down in the list to the tcp/ip, select it then select properties, then make sure it is set to automatically detect on the IP address and the DNS address.

This problem can also happen if you are not connected to a DHCP server in which you would do the opposite of above and type in your IP address, subnet, gateway and dns addresses, though it is most likely not the case.

You can go to device manager and uninstall the network device. Then reboot and it will find it and reinstall it. Then see if that works.

You can get to device manager by right clicking on My Computer or computer in vista, click on the hardware TAB then select device manager then look on the list for your network card.

Also make sure you have the latest driver for the network device.

Sometimes things can cease to function after an operating system update.

Have you installed anything recently. One thing that can solve problems is system restore.
Try restore the system to a date before the problem occured. In windows xp go to the start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

If none of this works you can purchase an ethernet card or replace the motherboard. The ethernet card of course would be the least expensive route.
