Question about Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

1 Answer

I have a Silvia which is about 6 years old. Over the last few weeks, when I am brewing coffee, some water leaks around the portafilter. The portafilter is well seated and properly tamped. How do I approach the problem? Is it something I can do, or must I find a service shop?

Have you ever changed the brwe head gasket? It should be changed yearly at least. They get hard from the heat and won't seal. They should be soft to make a good seal. You can change it your self. I have left post on changing gaskets. Look for Silvia solutions.

Why won't my portafilter stay engaged once the water starts dripping? It flies off and sprays coffee grounds, and this started last week. Stays in place only if I wrestle with the filter handle.

It is possible that the grind you are using is too fine and causing so much back pressure that the portafilter is moving, also possible that the group gasket installed need to be replaced, I have also seen this happen with damaged screens.

Steam comes out the grouphead

It should not leak steam out of the grouphead. The three way valve is leaking.

First of all if it is new, get it fixed under warranty. The three way valve is a replaceable item.

On the other hand if you are like me, you can try a back flush with just a tiny bit of coffee machine detergent like "Joe-Glo". The directions might say not to do this but if it is my machine, it's my machine

  1. Get a rubber disk for back flushing. Any place that sells the detergent should sell the disk.
  2. Put the disk in the portafilter and add just a few grains of detergent.
  3. Install the portafilter and "brew" for about 20 seconds, then switch of for 15 seconds or so..
  4. Refill the water reservoir as needed.
  5. Repeat the "brew" cycle until you get "detergent water" in the catch pan. It may take 6 to 8 cycles.
  6. Remove the back flush disk from the portafilter, reinstall, and run a couple of normal 30 second brew cycles to flush detergent out the valve and grouphead.

If this was a coffee maker in service for a while and might have a water scale buildup, I would do the same thing but I would dissolve some citric acid in the water reservoir and descale the boiler, valve, and grouphead at the same time.

Rancilio Silvia - Water coming from behind into the drip tray when pouring a shot.

Correct
When you are finished and turn the pump off, the 3 way valve opens and relieves the pressure in the brew head so you don't get an explosion of coffee when you remove the portafilter.

We have a new coffee house with new machines. Our rancilio sometimes has water coming out all around the basket when trying to pull a shot. What is causing this?

You need to change the group head gasket. They only last about 1 year and then should be changed. Get 2 because they usually fail on Friday and you have a party on Saturday.
The gaskets get hard from the heat and don’t form to the filter any more so they leak.
When you get the new gasket.
Empty everything out of the machine (water tank, drip tray, etc.) Turn the machine upside down on a towel. This way you can see what your are doing.
Remove the filter screen and diffuser from the brew head. The black O-ring is your gasket. Carefully pry it out. Clean the opening good before you install the new gasket. Insert the gasket with the beveled side down (on the inside edge of the O-ring is the bevel). Once you have the gasket in place, use the portafilter to finish seating the gasket.

Our Rancilio Silvia is producing really bad tasting coffee of late...my husband thinks that it is old water but I think it may have something to do with the fact that it has been leaking from the steam...

Hi
More than likely its you brew head screen. Coffee will build up on the top surface and turn rancid after awhile. Remove the screen(its either a screw or bolt that holds it on). I like to remove everything and turn the machine upside down on a towel. That way I can see what I am doing. Clean everything even around the brew head gasket. This gasket needs to changed every year for best sealing of the portafilter. Buy 2 because they always fail on Friday when you have a party on Saturday.
Soak you brew head screen in hot water with a pinch of automatic dish washing detergent or espresso machine cleaner. Use a tooth brush to remove the crusty burnt on coffee residue or just buy a new screen. Clean this screen every 6 months because they should last the life of the machine.

Silvia leaking water

Hi
The solenoid valve needs back flushing the correct way with a espresso machine detergent like Cafiza, or Joe Glo. Place a 1/2 teaspoon in a blind basket. (don't come with Silvia). Place blind basket in portafilter and brew like making espresso, but run pump for no more than 5 to 10 seconds or until the pump starts to change tone (slow down). Stop the pump when either of these things happen or Silvia can be damaged. Repeat the pump 5 to 10 times leaving a 1 minute wait between cycles, or the suds comming out the 3 way valve turns pure white, with no coffee stains in the foam. Remove the portafilter and rinse then reinsert and repeat the cycles to rinse the internals. This should take care of the problem. If not you may have to replace the 3 way.

1) The coffee you are using may not be ground finely enough to provide a proper extraction time, resulting in water rushing through the ground coffee much too quickly. Think of it like water running through a handful of pebbles as opposed to a handful of sand. You want "sandier" coffee.

2) Your gasket (the rubber part that seals the portafilter to the group head) may be worn/damaged and is leaking water when you are brewing. Attempt to contact FF! or Saeco to secure a replacement gasket. When you are not using the machine, don't tighten the portafilter all the way in to the head, either leave it completely disengaged or only loosely attached. This saves wear on the gasket.

3) Your brew water may be too hot. Purge your boiler right before brewing by running water into a bowl without the portafilter locked in. After a few seconds the superheated water will be run out and you're ready to brew.
