OK, I've figured it out! There's something wrong with the control chip, so if you don't have it under warranty, here's what you can do:
1. Turn off the monitor
2. Unscrew the face of the monitor
3. Remove the bottom part of the face from the backside, so you can see the chip
(the control chip is located on the face of the monitor, under the buttons)
4. You will see a small white connector about 5mm wide, UNPLUGG it
5. Put the small cable that you've unconnected under the front, so you can close the monitor back
6. Close the monitor and plug it back in

That's it. You won't be able to change your settings (they autoadjust anyway), but you won't have to throw the monitor away!

Peace.

Maybe you should try re-setting it to factory settings.

SOURCE: samsung syncmaster 720n brightness windon keeps

I just rang Samsung UK and was given the following; With the monitor ON, press and hold the power button for 10 secs, which also turns it OFF. Then press it once to turn it ON again.

So far the Auto Adjust hasn't operated again.

Have samsung syncmaster 720n monitor. adjustment menu blinks on/off. how to stop?

Trying the hold down power button for count of ten (did count of twenty just to make sure) didn't work. Menu came back up. Will try unplugging control chip next (this fix doesn't make sense to me ) will see if monitor will work without chip>
