Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I have a 6 year old GE Profile DPSB620GC1CC which seems to be running fine except that it has become noisey when the drum is turning. It is like the normal sound of rotation only much louder. It is more a rumble than a squeak. Would could be the source? What component should I consider replacing

Yes, open it. You'll probably find a broken or loose belt.

More help?, let me know.

How do I get to the drum to check the belt

Doc,
It sounds like you have either a worn out rear drum bearing and or front drum slides. Has the problem gotten worse over the last few months of use?

Mary,
It is impossible for your dryer to produce heat without the drum turning becaue there is a "belt switch" that will prevent the heater or gas valve to power up if the belt breaks. One exception is if your dryer is very old and doesn't have the belt switch on it. It would then have to be circa 1982 or older before UL required all dryers to have a belt switch. One exception to this would be two fold- Your heating element would have to be shorted against the steel heater frame AND the belt broken at the same time. Very unlikely for these two things to happen at the same time. 30 years expierence talking... Brian
