If you are looking 6for a password for the hardware then you must enter the BIOS by pressing F2 key at boot up. But let me also warn you that if you forget this or any password you may be in deep trouble. As regards the BIOS password, you can obliterate it by removing the small button cell on the motherboard. Just remove this battery for a minute or so and the password resets. But if you use the XP or the HDD password and forget it then no one can save you. My advice would be not to use any passwords at all.

There are 2 types of passwords - hardware and software, each with 2 variants.
The software passwords - for the XP administrator and login - can be reseted using one of the disks mentioned in this article
http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm
The hardware passwords - for the BIOS and hard drive - are much tougher: the BIOS password can be removed only by rewriting the BIOS at chip level and this can be done only by an IBM dealer. The hard drive password can be removed only by decoding it and inputting it at the start - this can be done only by a few very specialized companies and it will cost a fortune. If you weren't the one that activated it then the hard disk is defective and practically dead - just replace it and reinstall.

If it's the BIOS password then the only ones that can reset it are the IBM/Lenovo dealers - the laptops were designed like that.

My ibm thinkpad t43 displayed a message "hard error D0014" on a small blue screen. when i shut it down by pressing the power button for a few seconds, it restarted. but the programs won't work.

This could be a problem, not sure if its a software related or if the hard drive is bad. If you can find a windows xp cd. Try and wipe out the hard drive and install windows xp on it. If it goes thru then you'll just need the drivers. If it errors out on you then you know its a problem with the hard drive and you'll need to replace it. If you get windows xp installed on it, let me know and I'll help you with the drivers.

Trying to upgrade H/D on IBM T43 laptop, get 2010 error on

Error code 2010 is definitely hard drive problem.

Did you get the firmware from the site below?
Link to hardware maintenance manual for reference:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/39t2393.pdf
Here's the fix straight from the maintenance manual:
If in the primary bay the customer is using a non-IBM or non-Lenovo hard disk drive (HDD), or an old generation IBM HDD which is not supported by this system, with the risk in mind, the customer can still use it by pressing ESC. If in the primary drive bay the customer is using a supported IBM/Lenovo HDD with an old firmware, the customer needs to update its firmware to the latest. The latest version is available at http://www.lenovo.com/think/ support

Re-format laptop hard drive

Hi, If you REALLY need to FORMAT your Hard Drive, that is...SCOUR out ALL THE DATA on it, then get a CD disk with Win 98 FDISK on it. It can be downloaded by a friend who can BURN it for you. Go into STARTUP by hitting appropriate "F" key, (experiment here...), then tell the BIOS to start up in CD drive..
Save setting, restart, at the C:>: prompt, type "FORMAT C:", & telll it to go... Hang onto your hat, your Hard Drive is being SCOURED CLEAN & prepared for new data to be installed... Dugal

How to remove IBM t43 start up password

If you know the password, enter the BIOs. At start up you should see that option briefly displayed. It will prompt you for the password. Once its entered, you can do what ever you'd like. There are "three different password groups" on your machine. POP, HDP, and SVP (Power on, Hrd drive, Supervisor). If you don't know "either the HDP or especially the POP", there is nothing you can do except buy an new MB or HD. There is not short cuts. Hopefully you have the passwords and you'll be OK.
