Question about KitchenAid KT2651X Epicurean Stand Mixer

1 Answer

I have an Epicurean KT2651 mixer. When pressure is put on the mixer paddle it stop turning. I thought a gear was stripped but when I opened it up and took it apart the gears seem fine. They are all metal. No gear seem to be connected to the shaft so it can turn the paddle? Motor runs great and the visible gears mesh and turn but not the shaft? Am I missing something?

I am attachment of a schamatic to help explain:
The gear with the cut out(#21) fits into the pin OK. It's the gear under it(#19) that meshes with the gear(17) that the motor turns (it lays flat along side it).

I hope I am explaining this right:
So the mixer has the shaft coming through the metal plate(24) to a gear(19),then the pin is in the shaft then another gear(21) that the pin sets in. Then the housing goes over the gears and the gear with the pin meshes with the housing gear to turn any added attachments.

So it's the first gear(19) that sets on the shaft after it comes through the housing. As soon as there is any pressure on the paddle it stops turning with the shaft It almost seems like that gear should have a pin also so that it turns with the shaft?

    Hay Adam,
I think I found the answer. I checked all the gears you said and everything was OK? But as I was fooling with the paddle, turning it,the top gear # 21 popped up off the gear #19. There was no lock washer on the shaft to hold it in place!! I didn't find any broken but it could have been in the grease when I opened the housing and started to take it apart or it was never put on. ( I replaced the housing unit first because it was cracked which gave it a little room for the gear to move up off the other gear). I bet that's why, when I put it back the first time it worked but as soon as it met any resistance it popped up enough to not mesh with the other gears.

I am sure that's it!! I will order one and see. Thanks for your help and I hope I don't e-mail you again next week!!

Hey Dave, I believe a gear needs to be replaced in my mixer (same model as yours), but am not exactly the handiest of gals and was wondering if you could provide details on how to disassemble the planetary. I noticed instructions for other models on the internet, but i don't have a planetary shaft roll pin to remove, and there's only one indentation to try and pry the planetary off. I did try using a flat screwdriver to see if I could pry it off, but I didn't want to pry too hard in case I was missing a step. Any instructions you could provide would be of great help. Many thanks in advance for your help with this.

The shaft that the paddles etc attach to is held in place by a small pin. When you remove the planetary assy from the mixer the shaft should go through the metal plate, then a thin washer/shim then the gear, then a circlip on top. The gear has a cut out underneath that holds a small pin. It's this pin that might have failed.

There is also another pin in the transmission that goes from the front of the unit to the motor. That might also have failed.

Hope this helps. Pin part number for the planetary is 9707223.

Hi, on that diagram you listed can you check part number 18 is in place and not causing gear number 12 to slip inside the planetary. Also check that the ring gear that comes as part of part 24 hasn't lost any teeth.

Also check part numbers 28 are intact and in good condition.

    Hope that helps.

My mixer turns on and the paddle turns, but when I add any ingredients to the bowl, it stops turning!

sorry to say but you have an inside gear problem, not catastrophic in and of itself, but it will require a full tear-down, the worm gear is either worn down or stripped, It is made of nylon and its supposed to wear out or give out if there is a problem. It appears that there is enough gear left to turn the paddle but as soon as you have any load on it well not enough tread left to keep spinning the paddle. Service center will cost from $150.00 to 200.00 depending on where your nearest KA service center is (that includes shipping) If you are good with mechanical stuff you can do it yourself for about $50.00 dollars. There are sites on the web that will show you how and your parts list from the kitchen Aid site will show you what you need to order off of ebay to repair it.

KitchenAid Mixer struggling to spin?

Check everything you have done for a mistake, the pin through the planetary, the pin through the fuse gear and the pin in the main shaft that drives the bevel gear. That's the gear that pinion gear on the fuse gear shaft mates with. After that you are left with a fuse gear fault. I am assuming that the motor is turning at normal speeds and not somehow binding up, no reason why it should as motor stays in one piece during gear changing procedure.

Motor clicks every turn

The clicking is probably a small nick in one of the gears, even the smallest chip can cause alot of noise or make the mixer click. Is the beater shaft still turning when you have a load in the mixer (bowl is full)
Or is it just clicking?

If the beater stops turning it is going to be caused by stripped gears, however if it is just clicking this would indicate just a nick in the gear. Either way I would recommend opening the mixer and replacing the damaged gear/gears.

Your mixer is considered a 5 Quart Professional, which means it has the same parts as a KitchenAid 6 quart mixer. The first thing you will want to do is take the mixer apart and disassemble the gearing. You will want to clean off the gears with paper towels and wd-40. Carefully inspect each gear once clean and replace damaged gears.

In the professional mixers when a gear strips you need to replace the grease and housing gasket, this is because the gears are all metal and there may be metal shavings in the grease which could cause the gears to strip again.

The most common gear to go bad in the Professional series mixers is the Worm Follower Gear (9706529). Here is a link to that gear on our website:

Also, here is a link to the service manual for the mixer, this will aid you in taking the mixer apart and putting it back together correctly.

The mixer motor runs good but beaters turn slowly and will not turn when the beaters are under load. Is this a clutch, gear or what? Any ideas? Do you think it can be fixed?

I found out by marking the shaft and gears with a magic marker that the main shaft that drives the sun gear was slipping. My cure was to drill a 5/32 hole a 1/4 inch down through shaft and drive a 5/32 roll pin through it and it solved the problem. See my picture.

Grease is driping from the motor down the paddle attachement. Is there some way to fix it?

Carefully pry the chrome ring from the gearhead of the mixer. Item 28 on this page :

You will find 5 screws under the chrome ring. Tighten them and the oil (grease) will stop leaking from the gasket which seals the gearcase halves.

My 6qt Kitchenaid stand mixer started making a grinding noise and beater bar keeps stopping. When I put it gently with my finger, it begins turning, only to stop again and make that grinding noise. It is...

They seem to have a plastic gear built in as protection for overloading (prob). When the machine counters to much resistance that gear will strip its teeth causing the machine to not be able to turn, that it what seems to be the grinding problem. If it is not the plastic gear then it another gear that is "stripped(of its "teeth") I hope your problem is not a severe, but if your mixer is "locked up" then at least you found the problem.

Mixer quit working

Quite likely you overloaded the capacity of the motor and it simply overheated. The brushes inside the motor may be burned out/corroded. I suggest putting a light load on it and seeing how it performs. Often, when this kind of thing occurs, a bit of light duty use will get the motor back into good working order. But be careful to not over-tax the unit again. There are several different KitchenAid mixers on the market, some nothing more than ornamental, all the way up to commercial-grade.

Will it grind any wheat? I had a similar problem with the wheat overwelming the drive system and had to use smaller amounts of wheat to keep the system grinding. Do you have the feeder attached? I couldn't just load it up but had to feed a little at a time. Hope it helps. Favorable comments are apprieciated.

I think this link will help you understand what is needed to fix your mixer.

You will need to purchase a gear. Here is link MarBeck should have it.

You may need to replace some grease. Make sure to use a non-toxic food grade grease.
