Question about Weller Welding Tools

1 Answer

I have a Weller WTCPS station with a TC201 iron assembly using a EC234 heater and a 700 degree tip. I've used this iron for years now, but it just stopped heating. Nothing is getting hot. I measured 28vac across a couple of the plug in pins and I removed the EC234 heater and measured voltage there too. It appears that the EC234 heater has finally worn out, failed. Would that be your conclusion too based on the information I provided? Thanks. Jeff

Hi, I'm not sure the tip is defective. Check that the tip is screwed in tight. If it is not good and tight the tip will not get a good heat transfer from the solder wand. Hope this helps. If the wand will heat then the tip should.

You might want to check the iron itself with an induction power tester to see if it is getting any power to the tip. This type of tester doesn't require any dis-assembly just close proximity to energized circuits.

I have Weller EC1002, WES51, and WTCPS all with base, cord, and handpieces (complete). On shelf for years. Can you test, quote and do repairs as needed?

yes but shipping alone would eat a lot of $$$
they r pretty basic - u should be able to do that urself.
a multimeter may be necessary
it is either
broken wire in cables
bad connection inside case
thermal cutout
bad tip
switch.

You may have a broken wire in the temp sensor in the tip of the iron or near where the iron connects to the base.

Weller Solder Station EC2000 display light but iron doesn't heat

Hello theree and welcome to fixya
you'll find the datasheet for your model here, including troubleshooting guide, assembly diagram and parts list: http://www.action-electronics.com/pdf/wtcpltechsheet.pdf
In my case the magnetic switch was still working (there's instructions on how to test each part) but the heater barrel was open. I replaced the barrel and the nut (the newer barrels are slightly larger in diameter, so you might as well get a barrel nut at the same time) and the iron works perfectly.
You can get these parts from Digikey:
EC234-ND - HEATER ASSY FOR A TC201T IRON
BA60-ND - ASSY BARREL NUT FOR PES51&50
SW60-ND - SWITCH ASSM FOR SOLD PENCIL (magnetic heater switch)
Some are listed as 0 quantity, but they order them and I got mine in about 2 weeks. Other replacement parts are available, but if you have to replace too much (or the more expensive parts) on the iron you might as well buy a new iron. When mine broke, I fixed it and purchased a new weller that was adjustable for $100. Now my old one is the backup, and I don't mind bringing it to electronics group meetings.
However, this is a worthwhile iron to fix if the cost is not too great. The new fancier models have more features, but you really can't beat how durable and usable these old wellers are. While you're at it, you might as well get another tip or two.

It is problay the thermostat contacts that needs burnishing, that should fix it so that you don't have to buy a new heater / thermostat. Their parts are expensive.
