Take out the cartridge and examine the wire ribbon in the cartridge assembly. Many HP DeskJet 9800 users reported the ribbons getting damaged/punctured while installing or removing ink cartridges.
If that's the case your solution is to order part #C8165-67061 (google it) and install the entire assembly yourself. Be prepared that these items are delicate and some common sense is required.
You can also take the printer in for service to your local "big-box-electronic" store. This might not be cost effective so make sure you do your homework.
Insert your printer software installation cd and click on start then click on computer . right click your cd drive and click on open. go into the folder called util . then go into the folder ccc Run the file uninstallation l1(64). after the un installation is done . Restart your computer and re-insert the cd and click on add a device. after the installation your printing will be fine if it still does not work then you have a problem with your printer usb/printer. call into hp at 1800-474-6836 and if ur printer is more than 3 years old then ask the agent for an upgrade printer and you will get a 50 % discount on it,bear in mind this is not a new printer from the store but it is a factory new printer....tried and tested in the factory not used by anyone else but its called refurbished because (eg:if wallmart purchases 50 printers and realises they need only 49 printers they send one back which is tested again and again before sending it to the customer) and for this you are getting atleast a 50 /5 discount.
