Avmap ekp iv

Every 20 or so seconds the machine gives a pop-up "No Fix" and starts to search for the satelites again and again.

My EKP IV will stop working for some time and than start working again. When I stop for fuel it may start working after 5 minuits or even up to 2 hours. The factory asked me to send it back for them to check it, and put in a larger memory card.

Hello weertobal,

Where are you using the GPS when this is happening? In order to get a fix on its own location the GPS receiver needs to receive telemetry information from four or more GPS satellites. In order to get this data, the receiver needs a clear view of the sky.

If you are using the GPS indoors, in an area with a lot of obstructions such as mountains, trees or tall buildings or in an automobile or vehicle without an external antenna, then your GPS may not have a clear view of the sky. This can cause it to be unable to get a fix on its own location or it may take a very long time to aquire a fix.

If the problem persists when you are using the GPS outdoors with a clear view of the sky, then this may be a sign of a more serious problem that could require service.

Best Regards,
Ken

I have a ifinder hunt GPS, it will not locate any satellites, it then prompts me to stop searching or continue to search for satellites. I have been trying this device over the last 10 months, mostly on...

With a normal GPS device, when you first switch it on, it needs some time to locate enough satelites. Most of the time it needs at least 5 satelites. Some time should be like minutes and not hours. After the GPS device fond enough satelites, it knows where it is and can when it is switched on again work faster. When you try to let the GPS search for satelites indoors, or without a free view to the sky, it is possible the receiver never can find satelites at all.
I don't know if any test of the Lowrance iFINDER Hunt GPS was placed on the net, but that is where you can check how long it should take for the GPS to find enough satelites.

How to update Amap EKP IV. I downloaded a zipped file to the computer. In the zipped file are two files that match files on the compac card. If I move the zipped file to the compact card will the GPS do...

In order to update your EKP you need a CF reader, you cannot update your CF without it.
First of all download and unzip the update files from our support section.
Enable the show of hidden files. Create on your Desktop the folder 'Old CF'
and copy in it all the files from the CF (is the backup folder if something goes wrong).
Omit to copy the 'CHARTS' folder. Create on your Desktop the folder 'New CF'
and copy in it the same files you copied in 'Old CF'. Replace the files format swx
in 'New CF' with the ones you downloaded from internet. Ovewrite the files in the cF
with the ones in 'New CF' (do not touch the CHART folder). Turn on the EKP and verify
if the procedure was correctly executed. If not, reinstall in the CF the files from
'Old CF' and repeat the procedure.
NOTE! : this procedure can delete all user marks from the RAM. Save them first in the CF
with File Manager.
NOTE! For the update of 21/oct/10 you will need to update the Jeppesen cycle to !

Two year old tom tom xl can take up to 15mins to get a signal any advice

The TomTom device needs to tune in on three or more GPS satelites to find your position. On start, it scans the hemisphere for any satelites and ten minutes and more are not uncommon to establish fixes on them.

The solution is a data package you can download from TomTom servers via the Home software, "QuickGPSFix". It holds precomputed satelite positions for the next few days which speeds up locking to satelites to a few seconds from minutes. However, you need to update the package roughly once a week or the initial delay will pop up again.

My eTREX VISTA won't get a satelite fix any more

The unit needs to have the screen facing up. The unit will not read if it is vertical. Garmin cust serv finally helped me with that one. Once you turn on the unit, it could take up to 20 minutes (usually about 3) to grab satelites.

Satelite search takes forever

Hello bertvanjbert,

In order for your GPS to calculate its own location, it needs to receive data reports from four or more GPS satellites. This process is normally pretty fast. However, this assumes that the GPS has a clear view of the sky.

Obstructions such as tall buildings, trees and local terrain such as mountains and hills can affect your receiver's ability to "see" the sky. This is also true of GPS units used indoors or inside of a vehicle.

A GPS receiver without a clear view of the sky can take a long time to get a fix on its own location. The process can also take additional time if the GPS has been powered off for an extended period of time or if you have travelled a long distance (greater then 500 miles) since it was last turned on.

Hope this helps!

Can't get position fix

Check to see if the date and the start point location where you are located are properly set. The GPS needs close enough location and date to know where it is starting from.

Read the instructions about the initial setup.
