Put the old memory back, go to Dell's support page, download and install the latest BIOS firmware for your machine.
That should resolve your issue.

Change RAM in Toshiba Satellite A75 notebook

The Toshiba Satellite A75 came with either 256megs or 512megs of NON-REMOVABLE RAM. You will be able to insert a 256meg, 512meg or 1024meg stick of RAM in the slot. There will only be ONE slot to put the memory into. The only other socket on that computer will be for a wi-fi card but you would not be able to stick memory into that slot. The type of memory you will need is DDR333, PC2700, 200 pin SODIMM, 2.5 volt sync.

Adding Memory to HP Pavilion N5160

The motherboard will only recognize 256 module. If you go to crucial.com and run the memory test, it will tell you the maximum memory the motherboard will support. So buyin a higher memory stick is wasting your money since it will not support it.

Memory upgrade

Chances are you just need to reseat memory. Make sure the slot in the memory lines up with the DIMM. Flashlight helps.

More ram for my laptop

Never, NEVER buy a computer that is going to run Vista with less than 1Gig minimum!
2 Gigs of RAM is recommended for Vista.
To check on prices and the type check some online sites that sell memory

Most laptops have a removable door or hatch on the bottom where you can access the memory very easily. The modules easily clip in or out but never use force! (RTFM)
If you take it to someone, they'd probably charge $50 for labour, plus parts and the job takes 5 minutes.

Easily do it yourself, or find a teenager who's good with computers. Son, nephew, neighbour perhaps?

Before buying any new modules, check your laptop to see how many slots you have and what type of modules are in there now.
To upgrade to 2 Gig,  you will have to buy 2 new 1Gig modules, There's a 2Gig kit (1Gigx2) listed at one site for $80.

You would remove you current memory and install the 2 new 1Gig modules. Sell your 512 or make a keychain from it.
