Sound like a typical case of a bad coupling to the motor and transmission. This is a common problem with these machines. The repair should be right around $100.00 to replace the coupling and service call. While your at it have them change the plastic tabs in the agitator, these wear out about the same time frame as the coupling and should only add about $10.00 to the repair bill.

    1. .Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap. 2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up. 3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16" hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8" to ½" ratchet adapter to remove. 4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier. 5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand. 6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It's that simple. 7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly. 8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position). 9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly. 10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped). These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

if it agitates correctly, then its likely your lid safety switch, agitate and spin cycles are reversed by the motor during the cycles of agitate and spin, some units are wired to not operate on either agitate or spin, but some will operate on agitate with the lid open, but not on spin, open control panel and bypass the lid switch and this will tell you before you tear out the direct drive pump, motor and get to the d.d. coupler at the transmission

AGITATOR WILL NOT SPIN, WATER WILL DRAIN BUT NO SPIN

Does your motor sound like it is running in the agitate or spin cycle or is it quite? If the motor makes no sound, then you need to replace the lid switch with this part.
If you hear the motor running in the agitate or spin cycle but you don't see any action, then replace the motor coupler with this part.

Not spinning while it drains or agitates

If the machine is newer than 15 years and is a top load. The problem sounds like the drive coupling may be broken or could be dealing with a faulty motor or transmission. The motor spins one direction for agitate and spins the opposite for spin cycle. If the drive coupling is going bad it may still agitate and not spin out. The pump is on opposite of motor so thats why it will pump out. The motor has different speeds and one may be bad that will allow it to agitate but not spin out. The transmissions have plastic gears in them and it is a possibility that it will work in agitate and not in spin mode. To know for sure you may want to call a local appliance sercvice company .

The motor is working, but the mechanism not engaged by the helix so the shaft can not move therefore no agitation or spinning. Motor is designed to turn 2 directions: clockwise and counterclockwise for agitation and spinning. Therefore there are 2 mechanisms to assist these tasks. The drain is control by a separate pump and it is still good also.
The tube has to be out to replace the helix for agitation and a part to engage with the spinning rotation to release the brake so the spinning function can work. These parts are cheap, but the the labor is not. Hope this can help

Everything is working except the spin cycle

Sounds like the spin coil/brake solenoid is burnt out or broken. This is a coil situated on the motor plate under the machine with a lever attatched to it. When the machine goes into spin cycle, this solenoid pulls the brake away from the outer drum to allow the drum and agitator to spin together. The shaft that goes into this coil should move in and out freely. If tight, replace spin coil/brake solenoid.
