Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

3 year old Frigidaire just quit cooling. Temperature controls are set properly. Gaskets are good. No ice is built up. Both fans are operating. Coils were cleaned a couple months ago and are still very clean. Refrigerator is level. Compressor shuts off when thermostat is turned off and comes on when when turned back up. No strange noises or smells. Just the fact that it does not produce cold.

already pulled the panel in the back of the freezer and that is why I stated that there is NO frost or ice built up. there is nothing there. it is not even cold. and there is nothing that is blocking the fan in any way.

so I need a whole new refrigerator?

  • jyu9ef2yvp Nov 13, 2010

this being only a 3 year old unit and not having any issues up until now. How did it lose Freon? Is there a leak of some kind? Why did it just decide it was low?

  • jyu9ef2yvp Nov 13, 2010

what kind of smell would I get from a leak?

Hi, the most common fridge "not cooling" problem is a frost free failure. Remove the access panel in the freezer section to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils in the freezer section get plugged up with frost, this frost will block the evaporator fan motor from blowing the cold air around. The fan blade can also hit this frost and either become noisy or stop altogether. Locating the defrost timer can be tricky....they are often hidden behind the back bottom corners of the fridge at the bottom, in the last few years the timers have been located in the ceiling of the fresh food section, and some behind the cold control cover. Once you locate the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer with a straight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. You are now in defrost. If the defrost heater(s) comes on now, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater(s) does not come on, you can ohm test the defrost heater for continuity or volt test for 120 volts to the heater(s). If you have no power to the defrost heater(s) you can also bypass the defrost thermostat to see if the defrost heater will come on, join the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, defrost the fridge with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater* and defrost thermostat. If the defrost timer seems "hot" to the touch or is noisy ( like a ticking or screeching noise )...replace it.

To be on a safer side, call in a service technician to carry out a physical check up on the refrigerator before doing anything because from all what you have said on the refrigerator, it sounds complicated but i believe it has to do with freon..

There are two types of refrigerant used by automotive manufactures. The "old" style R-12, known by the brand name, "Freon." This is a completely non-flamable gas, that has no smell whatsoever. Then there is the "new style" R-134a , tetraflouroethane refrigerant, that is also non-flamable. R-134a has a strong, unique odor, that does not smell at all like propane. However, there are some substitute refrigerants on the market that do contain propane, butane, and all kinds of other explosive substances.

Frigidaire frs26r4 fan not working

So if your voltage changes with the fan plugged in, it would seem that your fan is blown and you need a replacement. This fan is needed to properly cool the top. You should be able to order the part directly from Frigidaire or there are many online sites to choose from. If you need help with this, let me know or if you have any other questions, just ask, otherwise, good luck

My refrigerator is not cooling properly. How can I find the source of this problem?

The controls on a unit like that cannot be set to extremes on one side. If you set the freezer to the wrong setting or the refrigerator to high then the balance is bad. The other thing is that the coils inside the unit might have ice on them and the ice is not defrosting. That means that no air is flowing through them.

Hello, We have a Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer

I don't know about Whirlpool refrigerator freezers, but my Amana has a temperature control in the freezer that regulates the overall cooling, and then the control in the refrigerator compartment controls how much of the total cooling is sent to the refrigerator section. My advice would be to lower the temperature setting of the freezer, and see if the temperature lowers in the refrigerator as well. Also, you can go to the Whirlpool website and they can help you further.

Kenmore refrigerator keeps running. We have tried differant temperature settings. Frig will not turn off. At the coldest setting the freezer does not completly freeze the food. Will not make ice cubes.

Sounds like a sealed system issue.

If the appliance is more than 3 years old OR it was repaired in the last 6 months, it may be a leak on the sealed system, so there is not enough refrigerant and it can't reach the adequate temperature.

You can try this:

1. Clean the back coils. remove all dust. (perhaps the coils are at the bottom).

2. Use a fan and blow some air at the coils. Check if temperature lowers. If so, perhaps the evaporator fan is broken.

3. The sides of the appliance are hot? Any recent service? Perhaps the technician forgot to connect a wire.

4. Unplug the appliance and wait about 10 minutes, then plug it back to the voltage. Check if the problem continues.

5. Where is the location of the appliance? Next to the range? In the garage? If the fridge is located on a hot place, it will not cool down properly.

If everything of above looks ok, then you may need to contact a technician. Check the warranty information in the user manual. Some appliances have a good warranty coverage.

If appliance is more than 5 years old, it may not be a good idea to repair if sealed system or compressor is broken. It will be quite expensive and repairs will not last long.

Good luck.

you say its operational again, does that include the cooling as well, or is it running and not cold. if its running and cold, and it was not running when it was previously discovered warm, then your problem is likely with the cold temperature control that you adjusted to get it going. When you first adjusted both controls to the coldest setting, did the unit kick on then or shortly thereafter? then absolutely that is your problem.

Fridge does not cool

Sounds like ice built up on the evaporator coils inside the freezer. thus hindering air flow to the refridgerator section. Is there ice build up in the freezer? This is assuming the temperature control didn't get changed inadverttily.

Hope this helps
