Is there a way to verify that the laser is working at all? If I open the tray and look inside, should I be able to see the laser reflecting off the top of the compartment? What color is the beam?

HI, the problem you are having is going to be down to one of 2 problems the first problem you could have is dust build up on the laser lense, to clean this all you need to do is go into any computer hardware store and buy a decent cd lense cleaning disk then run this in the player and if it is just dust build up then this will solve your problem.

now the second problem you could have is that the power to the laser has gone weak and this is then causing the laser to not read the disks properly so your player then thinks its the wrong disk inside. this is a more serious problem and may be able to bo solved if you pay someone to adjust the power to the laser, you need special tools and equipment to do this so its not something you can do yourself but most electrical repair shops should be able to adjust the power to the laser for you, now the downside to this is that increasing the power to the laser may get it working for a while but it causes the laser to burn out a lot quicker and their is also no way of knowing if adjusting the laser will solve the problem as the laser may all ready be burned out,

check if you have any warranty left on it as this fault will be covered, give the lense cleaning disk a try first then see how it goes if it dont solve the problem then i would suggest look into getting a new player as the cost of repair may not be worth it depending on what work needs doing.

let me know if you need further assistance.

give the cleaning a try first as this usually solves the problem as dust builds up on the laser and causes the problem you have got

DVD drive read/burn problem

From the description the new DVD driver is defective and should be returned if still under warranty. The only concern that I have is the replacement you got is identical to the original and that it is not a aftermarket product, because they don't have the same specifications as the original.

The dvd wont initialize blanc discs so that i can record with it.i have used different disc as well

Do you mean it won't format/initialize the disc? Alternative possible problem, when you put in a disc, does it not recognize that a blank disc is in the unit? Only DVD-RAM discs need formatting. DVD-RW discs need to be initialized. DVD-R disc do not need either formatting or initializing. (This unit does not write to DVD+R or DVD+RW discs.)

In the case of DVD-RW discs that can't be initialized. Check if this has already been done (or if you need to unfinalize the disc).

If the new disc is not being recognized as a blank disc, the recorder may not be recognizing the disc (dirt, scratches or manufacturing issue) or the recorder is not focusing on the disc properly. In the first case, clean the disc or try a different type of disc (Samsung claims that their discs will be most compatible). In the second case, the unit may need service.

I hope this helps.

(usually tracking and focus problems will be seen on both recording and playback (even with commercial discs).)

Does the unit recognize 80 minute discs?

Any desk CD recorder will only recognize discs labeled "Audio Disc".
That means you cannot use CD-R or CD-RW discs, that are basically data discs. No matter duration, if your 80 minute disc is CD-R or CD-RW, your unit will not recognize it. Good Luck.

Disc drive stopped recognizing discs

This is fairly common, it means the actual DVD drive has failed. You will need to call Nintendo. There is a good chance it is still under warranty and they will fix it for free. Their number is 1-800-255-3700

Not sure, but could be as simple as switching to a dvd-rw disc. Not all recorders recognize all formats.

Won't recognize blank DVD+R disc

Try the next disc in the stack, and see if it will recognize the next one. If not, the problem is most likely the recording speed of the +R disc. Before you go changing disc types, however, I would also check the Record Mode you have set for the dub - if the REC Mode is set for XP, try changing the mode to SP and see if you have any luck. If it still won't work, try one of the tested +R discs:
SONY (2.4x, 4x, 8x, 16x)
TDK (4x)
Mitsubishi (4x, 8x)
Ricoh (2x, 4x, 8x)
