I hae to say it, but it sounds like the motor has already gone out. That loud humming noise is usually the start windings going out. There is no other way easily to tell if the motor is out, but taking the belt off and saying it doesnt look broke what work in this situation. I would imagine that you have a DOTT (Dryer Of Tommorrow, Today) dryer, because you said it had the front panel. The motor part number is 279787 if this the case. Good Luck, and let me know if you find out any new information or need further help.

SOURCE: Hoover Tumble Dryer 5030D

I picked up a second hand unit which had the same problem.
I removed the back (philips head srewdriver and 1/4 in socket) and vacuumed all the lint from around the motor, and the vent at the back.
The motor drops our easily for cleaning (1 screw). Make sure the belt tensioner goes back in the same slot.

Mine now works as normal.

Sounds like the belt that rotates the drum may be slipping. Does your drum turn ok when no clothes are in it? If you have to start it by hand and then it rotates ok chances are you need more belt tension.

My Haier Dryer Model RDE350AW only clicks when I press start button, any suggestions?

Since the start relay is clicking it is likely closing the circuit and sending voltage to the dryer motor. You may have a defective thermal limiter fuse blown, it is near the dryer motor so you must remove the back or front of the dryer to access it for testing. Always unplug the dryer before any work is done. You will need a DVOM meter (about $10.00) to check the fuse for continuity.

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you

Drive Motor

The dryer drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. If the dryer stops the motor might be defective. If the dryer stops and the dryer motor makes a humming noise there might be something caught in the blower wheel, or the drum might be binding. Try removing the belt from the motor and checking the blower wheel for obstructions. Also try rotating the drum by hand with the belt off, it should rotate freely. If the drum doesn't turn freely, determine what is causing it to bind. The dryer motor can't be tested easily. If the drum turns freely and the blower wheel is clear, and yet the dryer still keeps stopping mid-cycle the motor may be defective. it will need to be replaced. It is not serviceable.

Drum Roller Axle

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If the roller axles are worn out the rollers may not spin freely which can overload the motor and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, remove the belt and spin the drum, it should spin freely. If not, check the rollers and roller shafts.

Drum Roller

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If they are worn out or start binding the motor can get overloaded and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, check to be sure the drum turns freely with the belt removed. If not, check the rollers. Do not lubricate the rollers or roller shaft, lubrication will attract lint and cause the roller bearings to wear out faster. If the rollers don't turn freely, replace them. The roller shaft can often be reused, unless it has worn down. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.

Drum Slide, Glide, or Pad

The front of the dryer drum is supported by small pieces of plastic-like material. As the drum rotates, it slides on these plastic pieces. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, it may be that one or more of these plastic slides or glides has worn out. When they wear out the drum can start binding and put strain on the motor. The motor then shuts down and the dryer stops. Check the glides for wear and replace as needed.

Drum Bearing

The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. Over time this bearing will wear out and may cause several different problems. If the dryer stops during the cycle it may be that this drum bearing has worn out and is putting too much strain on the motor. If the belt is removed and the drum spins freely, the drum bearing is probably not worn out. If the drum bearing is worn out, there may be some grinding or squealing, and the drum will be hard to turn.

Dryness Control Board

The dryness control board shuts off the dryer when the clothes have reached the level of dryness selected by the user. If the dryer stops too early, the dryness control board might be defective. This is not very common and other possibilities should be checked first.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

You did not include a make and model number for your dryer so... this is a GENERIC response. With a make and model number we can better help you.

The long buzzing your hearing is the motor winding trying to start the motor. After 30 - 45 seconds if the motor does not start the thermal overload will cycle and prevent further attempts for around 5 - 6 minutes until the motor winding cools down.

Causes of a dryer motor not starting:
1. Binding.
a. Broken dryer fan blade lodged inside the blower housing
b. Motor start switch failure
c. Motor bearing failure

2. Dryer drum bearing / roller problems
a. The drum can be bound up and dragging on internal components of the dryer
b. The Idler pulley bearing may have failed and it is now a brake.
c. Front or rear drum seals failed / pinched against rear or front of the chassis
d. Drum roller bearing failure and is now a brake.

Reach inside the drum and see if you can turn the drum. If you can not turn it with a little effort, you need to find out where the binding is inside your dryer.

This is the best I can do for the moment without a model number. With a Make and Model number I can provide parts listings and item numbers of where to check.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

When we press start on our Frigidaire dryer it makes a hum, buzz noise and it wont run.

either you have a bad motor or something is binding it up.open the door and see if you can spin the drum,if it spins freely it most likely is the motor but i've seen the belt break and get jammed in the motor so it would be a good idea to get in there and check it out,if the drum is hard to move again it could be the bearing in the motor or a sock or something could be stuck in the blower wheel which is connected to the motor binding it up,again you'll have to get in there to check it out, send the model number next time and let me know what you find

Hey when we turn on our dryer we get a burning smell and the drum doesnt turn, any ideas? we think the engine might have burnt out?

Either something is binding the drum, or the motor has failed. Can you turn the drum by hand? If you can, then most likely the motor has failed, if you can't turn it by hand, then the drum is stuck and the motor just isn't able to turn it until you find whatever is binding the drum. You might have to remove the back panel to get in to see what might be causing the problem if it is binding.

Let me know what you find with this.

Will not start consistently. Will make humming

This is a very hazardous condition and you should not use the dryer until it is repaired. First, unplug the dryer! Then, remove the front panel screws (if any), and gently pry it off of the cabinet, door and all. The panel is usually retained by steel clips. Next, check for foreign objects that may be causing the drum to bind. Whether you find anything or not, slide the drive belt to the rear and lift out the drum. Notice how the drive belt is routed through the motor drive pulley and belt tensioner.
Inspect the motor, drum suspension rollers, and belt tensioner for any binding or discoloration. However, if the motor was throwing sparks, replace it. Check wiring harness and connectors and repair or replace if damaged.
If any drum suspension rollers or the tensioner pulley binds, replace them. They're relatively cheap. Upon reassembly, make sure the drive belt is routed correctly around the tensioner before reinstalling the drum, being careful not to twist the belt. Upon reinstalling the front panel, turn drum by hand at least two revolutions -- it should turn smoothly. Plug it in and test the operation.
