Have you checked the points under the flywheel to see if they are corroded and or breaking when engine is turned over.

  • Kevin Smith Nov 17, 2010

Alot of theolder briggs had a set of points under the flywheel underneath a tin cover that you had to remove.
the points will need to be cleaned and check the gap and if it has sat for a long time it might need points and condensor replaced.
the points is what causes the spark when they open they cause the magnetic field in primary to collapse and induce voltage into the secondary causing the spark at the plug.

Briggs ans Stratton Quantum 5.5 HP still no spark after changing coil and plug

You are correct, you have a flywheel with magnets in, an electronic ignition unit which when the magnets pass the ignition unit core at speed energises and creates a spark via the plug, the earth wire simply takes the unit to ground and shuts off the spark, the unit you changed was it definetly an electronic unit or just a coil? if electronic and you are cranking the engine fast enough and have the plug well earted against the cylinder with the earth wire not connected it should spark.

No spark

Did you try grounding the plug against a clean metal surface of the saw and pull the starter rope. If you do not see a spark I would suspect the ignition coil.or magneto that the flywheel rotates around to create an elelectrical charge. Sometimes eith the magnet on the flywhell or coil can get rusty. Try cleaning them up with some light sandpaper. Just make sure you replace the coil with the proper gap between it and the flywheel. When testing for spark as described above make sure you are not touching any metal surface on the saw or you could get a shock.

My 5 hp briggs stopped running. No spark. took recoil off to reveal a rotten coil with wires rotted off. cleaned off the flywheel and replaced the coil with one from Napa. The engine does not have points...

Did you set the Air Gap correctly, it should be .020 inch. If the Air Gap is correct and you cleaned the pickup magnets, you should be getting spark. I have different color coded plastic sheets of the correct thickness to set the Air Gap on different engines. You could use a use a side panel from a plastic soda bottle (Mt Dew, Pepsi, ect) Place it between the Flywheel and the Armature/Ign Coil. Allow the magnets on the Flywheel to pull the Armature/Ign Coil together and then tighten the Armature/Ign Coil bolts. Carefully turn the Engine while pulling the plastic from between the Armature/Ign Coil Pickups. The Armature/Ign Coil is now properly set.

Generall speaking for a gasoline engine to run you need 3 things. (1) Spark, (2) Gas and (3) Air.

I hope this is helpful. UAW 974

You should have a strong, blue sparlk. Make sure plug is grounded to engine when you test. Don't do it in the air. Check the flywheel/coil air gap. I think on Briggs it should be about the thickness of a standard business card. If after setting the air gap and there is no spark...plug is bad or ingition coil module is defective. When you adjust the gap, make sure the magnets in the flywheel are lined up with the "legs" on the coil to assure the correct setting.

If it is an older BS it will be .015 That was standard. In fact an old match box cover would work to set them if you could not find a guage

Cant get a spark on my briggs and stratton 4hp engine, trying to

Doooh!!!! had the coil on backwards this will cause a weak or no spark situation. Should have had my glasses on , there is a faintly perceptable this side out on the new coils. Also there is no mention of this in the directions.

Chipper won't start

what engine do you have im guessing a briggs & stratton was it running previously or sitting awhile it can be a few things the flywheel key could be sheered or the points are bad or the flywheel & coil are rusted check flywheel & coil to see if rusted if so take coil off mild sand paper like 80 grit i beleave clean both to get the right gap between flywheel & coil turn the flywheel alittle bit so the magnets won't touch coil or if coil still of set flywheel to where it will touch magnets fat peice of sand paper not folded but flat sand paper about .020 gap between magnet & coil if you place sand paper against the flywheel magnet then set coil against sand paper & magnet that should give you 0.020 gap & it should start if not e-mail me i will guide you through everything to get it started

Hi Freddie ignition- to- flyweel gap means flyweel magnet positioned under the ignition coil armature.Remove the flyweel.Check the flyweel key(if it is sheared off install a new one).Remove the ignition coil.Clean the flyweel magnet and the ignition coil armature.Check the ignition coil wires and terminal to have continuity.Remove the breaker points cover, check the condenser and breaker points(they should not to be burned). The ignition breaker point gap and ignition-to-flyweel gap is 0.020" and the spark plug gap is 0.030". regards savumihai71
