Black Screen and Beeping on turning on my Laptop

Hi there,

I found on this page a question which is like my question, so I signed in and posted my problem there (

I am sorry for the double post I don't know why it happened, but now I think it is better to ask it in a new "thread", because mttchelle's post wasn't the main question and I don't think that the answer fits for his/her question.

Now my problem, which wants to be solved, hehe:

If I turn my laptop (Acer Aspire 9302 WSMi) on it seems to work properly, I mean the sounds of ventilation etc., the light signs a.s.o.. But I can also hear after approx. 5-10 seconds a longer beep and two shorter beeps and the screen stays black.

- I tried out with restarting (Shut down with power button).
- I also did same with waiting a while between the start ups.
- I also did with lithium-Ion-battery taken out.
- I tried several Fn+* button-combination, which could shut down the screen.

I heard from somebody that these beeps means its anything with the keyboard or graphics, but he isn't sure about that.

I hope someone can give me advices, information and thank you for giving your help and try to solve the problem!

I hope my English is not that bad,

See you folks.

    is see.

    1) What do you mean with basis in this context, I don't get it I'm sorry. Yes it's the first time that this problem occurs on any PC I used and I've got the laptop approx. 1 year and some months.

    2) I have installed some Games, Microsoft Updates (automatic), Microsoft Office, WinRar and other regular programs, but not last days (last was approx. 2 and a half weeks ago - "Install Creator"). Last drivers I installed is approx. 2-3 months ago.

    3) How do I get in the system if I can't see something, to reed e.g. what is the key-kombination to enter the selection of booting mode. (Screen does not show anything).

Thanks to that awesome "reaction" and trying I hope my information will help you for your diagnostics.

same here! one long beep and two short ones... got it working once when i fired up the laptop with only a battery in it... when the post screen supposed to appear plugged the power cord in... only worked for me once... i think its a bios problem... upgraded my vista and *poof* my bios graphics settings went screwed :D i hope someone has the solution to either Flash bios "blindfolded" or clear the CMOS the same way... after all i cant see anything on the screen and i dont want to get the flash wrong. (if that happens your EEPROM chip will be messed up and only help for that is to replace the BIOS Chip)

i have this problem with my acer aspire 9300... 1) this is a laptop that i use on a regular basis and this has happened to me once a long while back, but it worked again after i shut it off. 2) I did not install any new programs or drivers right b4 this happened. It was working fine, I shut it off for like 40 minutes, turned it back on ant this happened. 3) I don't know how i can boot into safe mode like this, because I can't see a thing and 3 seconds after i press the power button, I hear the windows sound.

I have exactly the same problem, first one long beep then followed by two short ones. After trying several times to start up sometimes it works and we can use the laptop but most of the times it stays dead (black screen) or you hear some starting up noises but the screen still stays black. would appreciate if anyone could help me.

Last night my computer was running perfectly fine, as it has done for the past 3 years, then this morning when I tried to turn it on this problem happened. The screen stayed black, then after a few seconds there was a long beep followed by 2 short ones. I've been trying it at different times during the day, dusted it, took out the battery and let it cool for a few hours - nothing. I really want to be able to access my data as soon as - I've got exams next week and have a lot of revision material on the computer (great timing, huh?)

One long beep followed by 2 short beeps indicates a problem with the display adapter; which accounts for the black screen. A couple of questions for you: 1) is this a laptop that you use on a regular basis and this is the first time you had this problem? 2) have you installed any new programs and/or drivers? 3) Have you tried booting into safe mode? You may be able to get into your system that way, especially if you need to get information off of the HD. Let me know the answers to the questions.

Power on the notebook, just wait 10 minutes untill it power off itself. I think it makes a memory check.  After that, just turn on again your laptop and presto!
it starts again.

Unfortunately, a black screen on ACER laptops is very common (too much indeed). This is "simply" due to a failing display chipset. The chip itself could be OK, but the welding on the motherboard is bad. Some "peak" technicians could re-weld the video and southbridge chipsets (both being 99% of the ACER laptop failures), bur theay are rare... And the professionals ask for the same price than a new mainboard... Until now, I had more than 40 ACER laptops in hands, and I begin to know the reputation of these PCs...

My laptop has that problem when i turn it on the screen is just black. please help... ASAP

firstly check if there is any signs of beeping sound when you switch on the laptop.

if not sound that means, you might have a problem with you processor or the mainboard.

but if you hear the beeping sound when booting up the laptop, try to use an external monitor or screen to chcenk whether the system is working fine or not. connect an external screen to the vga com port on the laptop and hold on function key (fn) and press f5 to see if the external screen displays something.

if yes, then you will need to replace the screen and if no, then send the laptop for service

Do you get the message to press f10 at all during the boot process? If so please press f10 and follow the recovery procedures. All Hi grade systems without disks have a recovery partition built into the hard drive and you access this via the F10 key during boot up. Please let me know how you go with this.

Blank screen with beeping sound

when a computer turns on it performs a POST (Power On Self Test) it check everything to see if everything is Kosher if so then it loads drivers then boots the OS (thanks to the BIOS) but if it come upon an error it immediately halts the POST and gives you a code...if it finds a problem after the drivers load (like the lake of an OS for example) then it would display the error rather that beep it...either way it wants to inform u of the error. based on ur situation the error was found prior to the loading of the drives. i recommend no doing anything and taking it to the geeks at geeksquad or someother PC service place (dont go to the flash attractive PC places however) hopefull the geeks at geeksquad will help you...

I can turn my laptop on but the screen is black

Do you hear a beeping sound when turning it on? Try connecting an external monitor (Desktop monitor) then press FN+F8 (Dell laptop only) and FN+F4 (HP laptop only). If it works on an external monitor, you may need to contact your computer manufacturer. check the warranty and request for an LCD monitor replacement.

If you hear a beeping sound when turning on your laptop or no power (no light). you may need to reseat the memory (RAM) or check the AC adapter (power adapter).

Let me also know the system model and computer manufacturer.

Keep me posted.
