First you'll want to make sure XP drivers are available for your motherboard. Download and run (it's free) SIW (System Information for Windows) to find the motherboard manufacturer and model #:
http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html
Scroll down to the siw Without Installer (English-Only) version. Once running click on "motherboard" in the left margin.
Then use your search engine to find the manufacturers' website and go there to see if the XP drivers are available.

Before wiping out Vista make sure that you create a recovery CD (s) so you can recover Vista if things go wrong. Usually you'll find that somewhere in the start menu listed under "create recovery disk" or similar phrase under the computer manufacturers' folder. Sometimes there is a hidden recovery partition installed by the manufacturer. When installing XP you will see it if it's there. Don't install XP over it.

Sometimes Windows won't let one install an older version of itself. If that happens while trying to install XP, post back and I'll guide you through the workaround.

You must feed the SATA driver to the XP installation program.

Options include.. disabling "Native SATA Support" (or enabling IDE emulation) in the BIOS which allows you to install and run XP without the SATA drivers..

or

Using a USB floppy drive to install the CORRECT SATA drivers during the XP install.

or

Finding and slipstreaming the CORRECT SATA drivers for your specific laptop.. The correct XP driver information for computer can be gleaned by writing down the appropriate Vista Device Manager listings BEFORE formatting the computer.

How to uninstall Windows Vista

You must use a full retail or OEM version of XP (not the cd from your old computer) this makes life really easy and can usually be downloaded from the web.
You must also have a genuine XP key, which has not been used on another system.
Next you should know or find out the specifications of your system, to do this goto Manufactures website.
The most important step is to find out if your hardisk is using SATA interface (if so you will require the SATA XP drivers and a floppy disk, as this is the only way that XP can install these drivers.)
Install XP via cd rom by booting cdrom at system start (if you cannot do this then you must access your system bios at first boot by pressing F2 or Del keys(or whatever key your system uses) and change the boot option to cdrom as first drive.

If your system uses SATA press F6 when XP prompts “press F6 to install other” at very beginng of XP install and install sata drivers from floppy.

Installing xp

Once you have installed Vista which is a higher version than XP, it is not possible to install XP after having installed Vista. The best way around is to uninstall Vista, load XP first and the again install Vista on a diff. partition. Now it should be operable with the choice to switch to the OSat your convenience.....sodeep

Win vista uninstall

Put your window XP disk into the Disk drive. Start up your computer. When it asks you what Drive you want to install it on select C:\ (where Vista is) Say yes to deleting the current Operating System and follow the instructions from there.

You did say you wanted to Uninstall Vista!

If you mean Dual Boot Vista and XP, then you will need to create a Logical Partition of about 10 Gb to install XP on and when asked where to install select this partition. But note that XP will wipe the Boot sector clean of all other Operating Systems which means that if you want to Dual boot then you will have to reinstall Vista again to get Dual Boot functionality.
