Question about Garden

MS 290 starts and idles on full choke, revs up just before the half choke setting but cuts out on half choke. It does this consistently. I have tried cleaning everything but no change?

Be sure to use fresh fuel mix. Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the condition of all of the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Make sure the carburetor is firmly mounted and all fasteners are tight. Check the condition of the diaphragm in the lower chamber of the carburetor--it should be flexible with no holes or cracks. Stihl ms 210. Starts ok revs fast then cuts out. Have to re start on full choke then run fast again on 1/2 choke and again stops after 2-3 seconds.


you have an air leak causing the unit to run to fast. The air leak is also over powering the flow of fuel causing it to die. Hopefully you have not tried running it repeatedly like this or you may have done severe internal damage due to running it to lean

Yes, you have a fuel issue. Start with adjusting the low and high setting to one turn out each, then set the idle. Could also be need carb rebuilt, air filter, etc.

Where do i set the idle scew at to start my ms 390


I wouldn't adjust the idle. If it is flooding out then either you are pulling it to many times with the choke on (shouldn't need more than about 5 pulls) or the carburetor has a problem

What is the starting procedure?


Start with the choke on full press the fuel siphon button till the lines are full of fuel. pull handle until it tries to start but stops. move the choke to half then start again. let it run for 60 seconds on full. don't move the choke to full or it will stop. Either slow the revs and then put the choke on full or keep the revs high and slowly move the choke to full (to allow the governor to slowly advance with the new revs)

Hard starting 4 cycle trimmer, 20 to 70 pulls


I got me one of these beasts and I can get her to fire for me in just 3 pulls.
(Oh yeah?! I can name that tune in just 2 notes!!)

Seriously....

Use that primer bulb. Use it with prejudice. Do NOT be afraid of it. What does this mean? Yes. Push it 10 times.

Choke full on.

Full throttle, choke fully on, give it a tug. You should see it hit and give a whitish puff of smoke.

Half choke - Position 2 - Full throttle, another tug. Should fire and rev with you still squeezing that throttle at full. Release throttle and LET IT IDLE at half choke for 30 seconds.

Move the choke completely off, continue to let trimmer idle for at least a minute to warm up the oil and block.

Git to whackin' that yard down. :D I just love my 575ES! (Polesaw attachment for the win)

Hard start tb475ss troy built weed wacker when i close the cold start lever it starts but its 75 degrees out its like the primer ball is inop but i see fuel moving through the lines when priming did not...


These 4 cycle trimmers need to be primed 10x before a cold start. The bulb will feel *firmer* on the last two or three depressions and you'll know that the carb is primed.

Full choke and and full throttle on first tug should see it hit once with a puff of smoke. Second start attempt should be in choke position two (half choke) and with full pressure on the throttle. Should rev to life on start attempt. Let the engine IDLE for 30 seconds, moving the choke to off at the end of the waiting period. Let engine idle to warm another full minute with no choke, then set to work!
