I'm a rookie - this does not seem to be working very well for me.

My printer is an HP C4200. I was on that page when I asked: "Print cartride missing or not detected." I thought I didn't have to identify the printer.

    Answer to your question:

I went thru the several steps on the HP troubleshooting page (cleaning, replacing, unplug cord and wait 20 sec, etc).

I also tried to work thru a menu by holding on/off & cancel at the same time, then blue, green, grey. Up came "solution" (I think). Then blue, blue, blue thru the menu lookin for System Diagnostic - but it wasn't there...

    Functionally Yes.
    Actually No.
My problem printer is an HP PhotoSmart C4200 (two cartridges). I don't know how it got listed as C6180.

If you have tried to clean the cartridge contacts & it did not work, you might also try to clean the golden contacts where the cartridge contacts are aligned to when you install the ink cartridges in the printer.
If this does not work, you will need to replace the ink cartridges.

What troubleshooting process did you follow? Please give more detail so we don't go over the same steps you have already taken. Thanks

SOURCE: keep getting message "Print cartridge(s) missing or not detected"

If these are new cartridges then you can try wiping the contacts and the pins with a dry paper towel then re install them. do not us tissue as some of them have lotion on them. If these are remanufactured cartridges return them for an exchange.

  1. Take the ink cartridges out of the printer.

  1. Turn off the printer and wait a few minutes.

  1. Turn the printer back on and insert the cartridges, and make sure that cartridges are properly inserted in place.

  1. If problem still persists, clean the ink cartridges.

Are you using OEM, compatible or refilled ink cartridges? Refilled ink cartridges have a high defective rate, and they may also damage your printer, so it is best to use high-quality print cartridges. OEM and certain brands of compatible print cartridges (such as MSE brand: http://www.dependablesupplies.com/search.php?search_query=MSE&submit_search=Search) are the best choices.

There may be debris that is blocking the communication between the cartridge and the printer, especially if you are using a remanufactured cartridge. Remove the cartridge and unplug the printer from the power supply. Take a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and wipe off the contacts on the cartridge as well as the contacts inside of the printer. Allow both to dry for a few minutes before plugging the printer back in and re-installing the cartridge. This should clear up any miscommunication between the two.

SOURCE: The print cartridge missing or not detected light

There are several things you can try. Make sure you are using HP original cartridges (not refilled/remanufactured).
Remove the cartridges and reinsert them.

Clean the contacts on the cartridges (remove one cartridge (unplug the unit after the cartridge carrier stops moving), wipe it with lint free clothes or cotton swabs that were dampened (squeeze or wring out excess water) with bottled or distilled water. Wipe the copper colored contacts until they are ink free. Avoid the nozzles. Allow to dry for 10 minutes or dry with another cloth. Then reinstall the cartridge (make sure it clicks into place) and repeat with the other cartridge. Work quickly, after 30 minutes you have an increased risk of the ink drying and clogging the nozzles. Plug in the printer and see if you can print.

Reset the printer. Turn on the printer, then unplug the power cord from the wall. Remove the other end of the cord from the printer. Wait 20 seconds before plugging in the power cord (wall outlet first). Turn on the printer and wait for it to initialize. Try printing again.

Try new cartridges and do a cartridge alignment. The problem could be with the cartridges themselves.

If the issue persists, then the printer needs service.

I hope this helps.

Have you removed the shipping tape from the print cartridge? It covers the print head on the cartridge to protect them so they won't leak ink.

Possibly dirty contacts. Try wiping the copper contacts on the print cartridge or, more likely, the printer where the cartridge makes contact.

What's probably happening is there is excess ink on caked on to the contacts on the carriage (I think that's what they're called). They're pretty easy to clean and the cleaning process takes about a minute. Just remove whatever cartridges are in the printer, take a cloth that will leave a minimal amount of lint, and wipe at the dark spongey contacts located just below where the cartridges would sit (that is, on my HP C4280, as other models might have them somewhere slightly different, but they should be right around the cartridges' spot). When the caked on ink is removed and all you are wiping at is the sponge, insert the new cartridge and the printer should work.
