Question about Rheem 40 GAL ELEC TALL Water Heater 6YR SC 82VH402

1 Answer

I have a 40 gallon Rheem Electric water heater. It is about 5 years old. Last week the T&P valve started to release some water about a cup or less, about every other day.Could I have a defective T&P valve or do I have to install a thermal expansion tank, or is there something else wrong within the tank itself.

I have water in the junction box on top of my hot water heater and into the electrical conduit leading to the hot water heater.

I do not see your earlier post with photo.

The problem could be the conduit.....
-disconnect the conduit and wires from water heater
-run wire into a junction box set lower than top of water heater... -then run another #10 wire from the junction box up to water heater...
-So if water is coming from conduit, it will accumulate into junction box and not in the water heater wiring cavity.

Next thing....
... a water softener can cause rusted tank.
-Softened water adversely affects anode rod...
-causing anode rod to deplete faster...
-once anode rod is gone, then tank begins to rust.
-Here are details for checking anode rod each 2-3 years:

You have sediment built up in the bottom of the heater, so you need to flush it out. Remember Water heaters typically are designed to only last about 6 or 7 years no matter what.

Water dripping out of drain line on my Rheem Water Heater

The T & P valve is connected to the drain and it may be bad causing it to drip. You could try lifting the lever and then closing it back on it to see if it will seal. Also check the thermostat for heat setting, but than likely it is going bad.

It is a pressure relief valve and normally last about 5 years or more before they need to be replaced. The purpose of this valve is to protect heater from building up pressure and protecting the home, It releases water once the heater reachs beyond the limit of the valve can handle.

It is a standard 3/4" thread and can be removed with a pipe wrench. Just turn power, water off and drain water down to just below where the drain is.

Lowes or Home depot shoul dhave one just ask for a pressure relief vakve for a Hot Water Heater. prices range around $15.00.

My Rheem 40 gal. LPG water heater has sat for two years. When I attempt to light the pilot manually, it goes out after I release the push button valve knob?

The pilots have to warm up, hold that button down for a min, then let it go, it should stay on. Then crank up the pressure, it should light. If you are worried about it, call your gas man, he will check it out. Hope this helps.

15 year old electric heater is gushing water out the pipes on top, what to do?

Shut the water off to it (should have a valve very near it on the cold side) and kill the breaker at the electrical panel. This needs replacing if it's the pipes I am thinking (the two 3/4 inch nipples coming directly from the top?).
