Laser assembly apparently is inoperative. Time to replace unit since repair is not cost effective.

When switching on the unit and loading a cd it can take a long while to register the cd then it will play for a few seconds then stop. this will clear after a few minutes and play as normal, however if i...

No this is not a common issue. If your traverse assembly is not damaged, then it's possible the loading motor might be the issue.

In either case, I would suggest professional assistance.

Hope this helps.

I works mechanically, but doesn't play the CD

try cleaning the lens first use a lint free swab and GENTLY clean the lens. don't use any liquid on this. if that doesn't work then load a disc and gently spin the disc when it lifts into load posistion. if begins to spin on it's own then replace the spindel motor. if it still does not spin, replace the optical pickup, the EF sensors inside the pickup no longer have the ability to read (see) the disc.
