Question about Tivoli Kloss Model One AM/FM Radio

The radio emits a loud scratchy noise when the tuner is operated. Can the tuner be cleaned? Or how can I eliminate the noise.

    There is no need to apply any grease. Simply turn the tuner knob all the way to the left and all the way to the right multiple times. This will spread out the internal grease and fixed the problem for me. All I had to do was call up Tivoli and the person who answered the phone immediately provided this helpful info!

This problem is often caused by one of two things. 1. Most commonly a build up of grease around the front (Knob end) bearing of the tuning cap causes an intermittent earth connection which causes the problem, or 2. The moving plates of the cap. touch the stationary ones, either because the plates have been bent in a open air style control, or the mylar insulation between them has been damaged in a sealed one (enclosed in a little plastic box).

Problem 1 can be cured by placing a drop or two of WD40 on the bearing and rotating the control back and forwards a few times to clean the bearing. This may need to be repeated once or twice in really stubborn cases

If 2. is the problem, gentle adjustment of the plates to prevent them touching will fix the open air type, while the sealed control with mylar insulation will have to be replaced with a new one - they are not generally repairable.

    I called tivoli with this same problem -- they told me to turn the tuner all the way left and all the way right multiple times to clear out any dust and re-grease the unit. This worked! I did not need any contact cleaner or wd-40.

I was able to resolve a scratchy tuner problem by cleaning and exercising the variable tuning capacitor.
First Disassemble the radio and locate the tuning capacitor. (it is concealed under a metal shield which covers the front and back of the circuit board) Then spray some tuning spray in the area of the 4 screws in a diamond shape. (These screws are trimming capacitors in the tuner cap.) Next rotate the tuning caps to allow for the cleaning fluid to penetrate. **This last step will throw off the calibration of the tuner dial** You can reestablish this calibration by finding a known station with the dial and then moving the dial slightly in the direction toward where the station should be(on the dial) reception should become poor. rotate one of the trim screws until the station becomes clear, repeat until dial is properly calibrated. Two of the trimmer are for AM and two are for FM.

SCRATCHY SOUND


This could be a fault with the built-in microphone.

One thing to try before condemning the camera is to plug in an external microphone and see if the noise disappears.

The final amplifier circuit goes out on these often. It controls transmit power. They transmit, they light up, they emit about .25 watts or less. IMHO, you are done. They simply are not worth anything and there are no parts available for that repair.

How do i stop the intermittent static?!


Static can be caused by a poorly charged or bad battery. Try cleaning your battery contacts with a pencil eraser, on the battery, radio, and charger. Then recharge the batteries and see if the problem still exists. If so, try a battery from a known good unit and see if it stops the static.

If the battery is not the issue, you could simply have environmental noise. RF (radio frequency wave) in the environment is a common problem in urban areas. If you are using the radios in or around computers and other electronic devices, coil the cords to these devices and make them tidy. RF noise can be emitted through the cord like it is an antenna of sorts. Coiling will reduce this effect.

If your radios have PL capability, aka private line code, interference eliminator, turn it on, or change the setting. This should block out unwanted noise and interference.

My portable electohome radio model EA15OK sitting on my night table makes a loud buzzing noise when my light is turned on.


It sounds like you understand the mode that causes the noise. What kind of light is it? Some lights emit RF so it wouldn't be a mystery that a radio would pick it up.

Scratchy noise while tuning


I've found the best way to fix this is to drop alcohol on the tuner while turning it fast back and forth, with the power OFF.

I have a motorola t5720 and when I hit the mon key it makes no noise. I also do not have my manual. What do I do?


The monitor MON button may or may not emit noise. On some models of radios it will have "white noise" when pressed. On others it is silent. MON is used to be "polite" and see if anyone is talking before you transmit, assuming you have the interference code eliminator turned on. It temporarily shuts off your CODE. If your CODE is set to zero, you would never need the MON button, as you will hear all radio traffic anyway.

For simple operation of your radio, set all your radios identical to one another with the same frequency, code and Qt filter (if any). Use the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button to transmit, and release it when you are done talking to listen for a reply from a fellow radio user.

Scratchy radio volume dial


Use an electronic contact cleaner. You need to shoot it inside the pot through the openings. Then rotate many times. This will remove oxidation on the contacts inside. If you don't use a contact cleaner, turn of f the radio and rotate many times the potentiomer left-right-left-right ...When you turn it on again, you will see the scratcy sound will be reduced but it will come back eventually. The more often you rotate, the less noise it will make. This is a very common problem, nothing to worry about.

Sounds like the bearings are broken and it may need a major repair. You may need to consider to buy a new washer machine.

Speaker noise


The contacts on the volume control (potentiometer) get oxidized over time on any analog rotary volume control. With the power off, crank the volume control back and forth real fast for a minute or two, this will do the most cleaning of the contacts that you can do without access to the insides. Ultimately you'll probably need to sprary some tuner wash/tuner cleaner or other electronic parts cleaner in the know (with the electricity disconnected) and then work the knob back and forth. Tuner wash bottles are available at electronic specialty stores or radio shack and usually have a long extension tube (like what comes with WD40). You might be surprised where you can reach with the extension tube.
