If your copies are clean when you scan them by opening the top and laying the original on the platen, you need to check the scanner for the ADF (automatic document feeder). It's a narrow strip of glass to the left of the scanning platen glass. Clean it with a soft cloth dampened with clear water. (Look for some type of deposit that aligns with where you see the line on the page.)

Verify the toner cartridge.Open the glass platen cover and make a copy,not used an original,if the cpy is a full black papier thr toner density is OK,Clean the polygon unit glass.Enter in program and perform a test page.
There is something on your scan glass. My guess is you are getting the line on your copies when you run the original through the document feeder. If you get lines through the document feeder but not on copies made off the glass then it is a dirty scan glass. There is a thin glass strip where the document feeder feeds the original. Usually something like white out that did not dry smears off an original and ends up on this thin strip of glass. Scratch it off with your finger nail and use some glass cleaner to resolve the problem. The scan glass is about 1/2 an inch to an inch wide and will be on the same side of the machine that the copier feeds the originals in on.
Do you see the same smudge mark if you lay the original on the platen rather than using the document feeder? If it only shows when using the document feeder, clean the scanning glass for the document feeder. It's the small glass to the left of the main glass with the cover open. Use a damp cloth and clean off any dirt or white-out.
Sometimes, the reason for a black line is dirt on the glass. Try cleaning the glass and rollers so there is no dirt that will stick to the glass from the rollers.
Also the original document make sure there is no dirt or creases as the creases will translate into a black line on the receiving end.
