Question about Mitsubishi TS-5057 50 in. Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Sound but no picture on Mitsubishi TS-5057 bi-screen TV. I've disassembled back shrouds looking for a bulb to replace. I just see 3 in-line projector units. What's next?

Thanks much for the quick response. Kind of what I figured after looking beneath the lenses. I'm familiar with HV so I'll most likely send it to the TV recycle graveyard. My hair is curly enough!

    Thanks again,

    Dave

Yes. Confirmed my assumption. Not what I wanted to hear but that's the way it goes....

Hi,
There are no bulbs in rear projection TV's, there are only 3 CRT tubes which project a picture on the screen. The bulb your referring too is that from a DLP projection TV which is a very different technology than rear projection. Since you have a rear projection TV that has audio but no image this means there's a problem with the TV's HV deflection. Here's a list below of the possible faults:
Bad fly-back transformer Bad HV splitter Bad Convergence IC's Bad Horz/Vert output transistors Cold solder joins along convergence area
Its best to get a professional to resolve this for you as rear projection TV's hold a deadly charge even when unplugged. If you don't discharge the flyback / tubes, the charge can kill you in less than 1 second.

Replace bulb in center rear stop light

Open your tailgate. There is a plastic shroud that covers about half of the rear window opening. Tug firmly and the clips will pop free. Remove the shroud and set it aside. From there, you should be able to see the 3 sockets that hold the bulbs in place. Give a quarter turn and the socket will come out of the 3rd taillight assembly. Pull out the bad bulb and replace with new.

Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Just make sure the shroud clips line up with the corresponding holes before firmly thumping the shroud back into place.

Cheers!

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

WD-52525 screen is jumping all around with wavy horizontal lines etc.

Good Day;

Keep talking to the factory, it is their product. Best Buy won't replace unless it is deemed not repairable and/or terms of the contract. You purchased the extra warranty because you most have felt that the TV might break down. Well, it did, now use the contract to repair your TV.

Good Luck, big IRISH.
