Question about Frigidaire PLMV169DC Microwave Oven

1 Answer

My Frigidaire microwave (PLMV169DCD) has recently stopped heating, but otherwise seems to work fine. I had a repair man come and look at it and said it was the magnetron. I purchased a used magnetron and replaced it myself. It is still not heating. I found the service manual for my model and starting going through the high voltage testing. The magnetron tests fine, the diode tests fine, and the capacitor tests fine. I then tested the transformer. The service manual says the high voltage output should come in at 82.5 ohms. First, I have never really used a multimeter, and mine has multiple different resistance settings (2000k, 200k, 20k 2000, 20) and it also has a sound option next to the 20. When I set it to the 20 and the sound option they come in at 156. I take it that means 156 ohms. Everything else on the transformer tests fine. Would this most likely indicate the transformer is bad?

A used magnetron is not a good idea at all to try and you can not test a diode with a digital meter. 99.9% of the time your transformer will start burning the wire windings when it fails. Also a magnetron can test good and still be bad. Without being there and looking at this myself the best advise I can give is to check the door switches, and if they are good just replace the Magnetron and Diode. You can order reasonably priced microwave replacement parts here http://allapplianceparts.com/. The mags they sell are better than most oem ones and are cheaper! You can also pick out a replacement diode from them.

My Frigidaire oven model PLMV169DCD has developed a defect

The only real issue with the control board that could cause that is a failing relay or bad connection, both of which I can repair on a control board for $54.95, which includes insured return shipping.

The first thing I would do is test the outlet. A toaster or hair dryer are good devices to use.

A microwave must be on its own breaker, or at least not on the same breaker as a high-current device (stove) or a device that causes spikes on the line (fridge, freezer).

It's possible you have a failing magnetron or high-voltage transformer, but I would need to discuss it to narrow it down.

For free additional DIY help and details, feel free to e-mail me directly from my site. Remind me of your full model number and detailed symptoms.

Frigidaire microwave evrything seems to work fine but does not heat anything

In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.

You most likely had a power surge and blew a fuse. First unplug the unit, then remove the top grill. There will either be one screw on top of the control pad or 2 on the left side. open the control panel and look for a fuse that has a ceramic center and replace it with a 20 amp one. You can find these at the hardware store
