Question about Craftsman 15 gal Air Compressor 3 hp UMC Horizontal k Oil Free Pump

1 Answer

I have a 5 gal, i hp craftsmen compressor, 3 years old, used once a year to blow down sprinkler system. Compressor ran up to 120 lbs upon turn on, would not cycle off. manually shut off unit and turned back on ,ok. opened solenoid valve for water system, compressor turned back on, how ever would not build up pressure beyond 20 psi. Isolated compressor from water system and still compressor will not build pressure beyond 20 lbs. what do you think? I removed out let air line to pressure switch and ran compressor with same results, no more than 20 lbs of air build up. Air filter is like new, no restriction. Is the compressor rings shot?

Oil free pumps do tend to blow the piston ring (not too expensive) available at searsparts.com. Remove covers to pump and manually turn crank until piston is at top and look at the condition of the cylinder neer top, If it looks scratched, order cylinder kit with piston ring. If it looks good and shiney, could be the valve plate in the head. There are reed valves that tend to break. Run pump however with covers removed and check with soapy water for air leaks and repair as needed (air leaks under the cover will prevent unit from filling). Good luck

well craftsmen doesnt make 3phase compressors in fact there all low voltage 120 volts , so lets start there the outlet your using is it rated for 20 amps 120 volts ? if not theres your problem but thats ok unplug compressor and use a small screwdriver thru the fan end to move motor shaft around thru one complete turn if you encounter any real friction the unit is damaged and needs repair

I had a 242-5D on a 120 horizontal driven by a 5 hp Dayton motor. I changed to a 2475N7.5 on a 80 gal vertical with a bad motor. I want to reuse the Dayton 5 hp motor. What can I expect?

Im not sure if iv;e got this straightYou had a 242running on 120 v driven by 5 hp dayton motor You have a new 80 gal tank with a bad 7.5 v motor and want to put the 5 v motor on it What was the size of the old tank if it was 60 or more you should be ok the 5 hp will have to work harder as long as you can make it fit you may want to consider droping down the blow out valve presssre spec 10 to 15 lbs depending on the size of the old tank

My compressor runs way too long to fill up to 150 PSI. It fills up quick to 120 PSI then just takes forever to get to 150 but finally does. It's only 1 year old with very little use. 17 gal, 1.1 horse,...

The pressure switch should be at the factory setting of about 120# max. Not to be hurtful, but what you discribe is normal. Even a 2 HP 220V is minimum for a compressor.. You go by the CFM Rating. You and I can not afford a two thousand dollar 12 CFM Unit. Your compressor is simply too small, to do much. It is pushing against tank pressure so much, after 90# that the reed valves can't hold it. Set it at 100 to 120. It is not designed to run up to 150 max. Now if it is,an oiless compressor , it won't last long. My Campbell- Hausfeld lasted 31 years. Got a new one two years ago

My craftsman 3 gal. air compressor, 921.153101 won't compress air

I WOULD TRY DISCONNECTING THE PIPING FROM THE HEAD DOWN TO THE TANK AND SEE IF ITS BLOWING AIR. COULD THE COMPRESSOR BE RUNNING BACKWARDS - YOU WOULD HAVE HAD TO CHANGE THE WIRING IN THE MOTOR.
VALVES IN THE HEAD COULD ALSO BE BROKEN. YOU CAN REMOVE THE INTAKE AND IT SHOULD **** YOUR FINGERS AT THE OPENING. HOPE THIS HELPS.
