Question about Sharp Aquos LC-42D62U 42 in. LCD HDTV

Black Boxes, and not those on jets, either!

For about 18 months, I have been getting countless and pointless black boxes on my TV. After reviewing all the channels I have access to, I see that about 10 or 15 channels are blocked, partially, by these black boxes. Do these black boxes serve a purpose other than to get the customer so ********** as to his/her breaking point includes trashing the TV? I did not trash mine, but I felt like doing so. So, my challenge to you is; show me how to get these "black Boxes" from hell gone permanently. Some of my favorite prograns have been affected. Whats worse, those black boxes usually happen between 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM and at 11:30 PM - 1:00AM. Please help. My email address is AE12Wrangell@aol.com

Certain channels get a large black box in the center of the screen. It doesn't happen everyday but at least several times a week. I have a sharp flat screen. I can make the box disappear for a few seconds by pressing the volume key, but it comes right back after a few seconds. So I have to go to another channel and in a few hours it goes away until a day or two and it returns.

It is usually caused by the text or closed captioning being on. Look in the menu to turn this off

TV screen is black but sound works on all devices.

Do you have a "cable-box" that feeds your TV?

Some older cable-boxes cannot decode the newer 'MPEG4' (compressed video) video that some cable-companies use for some of the channels. So, you get "black-screen", since the audio-stream is NOT compressed.

Talk to your cable-company, to upgrade to the newest cable-box.

Black box

This is probably TEXT1 or TEXT2 data, which is an extension of Closed Captioning. Try cycling through the CC settings using your remote to turn it off.

Black box appears in TV screen

The problem with the black box happened to me. I had pushed the subtitle button on my remote by mistake. Interestingly enough, as soon as I pushed the SUBTITLE key again, on the remote, the black boxes disappeared.

It also says CC which means closed captioned-- So the bottom on my remote is Subtitle, and then on the subtitle button is cc...

I hope this helps

Line accross top of the screen with flashing black and white boxes

Thin white dashes on top of screen is PERFECTLY NORMAL. It is nothing wrong with the TV, it is the broadcast. What you are seeing is the very bottom of the timecode running. It doesn't happen all of the time or all channels. It usually happens with old 4:3 commercials predating "Digital TV." This is mentioned in your Users Manual. You should be able to adjust the horizontal/vertical position in the menu settings.
